Prep school

Hey I am going to the prep school this coming summer and I have a lot of questions about what I need and how I should prepare. I went on my official visit earlier this year to the Academy and many people said to get your military boots before arriving at school so that you break them in? What are the biggest form of activities during the first few weeks of bmt?

thanks

CanCandMateus is the person you want to talk to.

thanks. I am new to this website but how do you contact someone directly like that?

click his/her name
go down to the second option "send a private message to xxxx"
:)

or you can click in your upper right corner on private messages. then on the left it says "send message". click that, type in the person's name and your message. either that or what missmuff said will work

...except his username is "CadCandMateus", not what PETKO wrote.

Come on, get it together PETKO! haha, j/k.

thanks. did this guy go through the prep school?

yes, he is just finishing now and will be in the class of 2012

Yep. He's there now, and will be part of 2012 at USAFA soon. He should be able to answer any questions you have. He has a pretty busy schedule (like Cadets ;)) , so it may be a little while before he gets on the web board again...

alright sounds good. Thanks for the help.

I just graduated from the prep school and i can answer your questions.

i wonder who it is hmm

I have a question, How easy or difficult was it to get into the USAFA prep school after enlistment? How long did you have to serve before going to the prep school? Which way did you go, active duty, reserve or ANG?

Sorry I cant help you on that question. I went in straight out of high school. I had a couple of priors in my squadron and from what they told me, you basically have to get in good with your superiors and commander. Their the ones who are going to recommend you. There were some priors who served 4 or more years and there were some who served 6 months to a year.

Active is the easiest to get into the Prep school because we can apply direct. The guard/reserve guys have to apply just like everyone else for the academy - although they do have the same amount of direct entry slots we active guys get.

You don't have to wait long at all. Actually, when I was first given information on the program I was told you can even apply in Basic. I wouldn't recommend doing that, at least wait for tech school so you don't get stuck on the training side. The upper bound limit is you do have to go before you turn 23 or hit Technical Sergeant.

Process - Fill out a form 1786, get it signed by your commander, get a recommendation letter from your commander, mail it by January 31. At this point you have your nomination and your recommendation letters you would normally need for entrance to the academy. Then you do the normal entrance requirements: Meet with your ALO, take the CFA, and write a few essays.

I personally was recommend for the program because my career field is dying off and I would rather go to the academy than wait to cross-train and then apply for AECP or OTS. It is an awesome opportunity.

What kind of career fields would one definately stray away from? I was looking into security forces. Why is it harder to get into the prep school through the Guard/Reserve? The 1786 form is the same, you just check Active, Guard, or Reserve. Can you take college courses while Active.

You use the same form to apply to the Academy but as it was explained to me, possibly incorrectly, the Guard and Reserve guys cannot apply directly to the prep school.

You most certainly can take college courses while active. Just going through basic and tech school will get you college credit from the Community College of the Air Force.

As to careers, that is up to you entirely. Some career fields are more college friendly, some not so much so. My job happened to be very college friendly so most people in my unit either are taking classes, have a degree, or have multiple degrees.
