Prepare thyselves for one of the weirdest questions you've ever encountered...

Maybe not weird... but I'm definately overanalyzing (or entirely missing) something.

Should I use block style when writing my essays, or do the whole indentation thing?

Because indenting kind of makes it look ugly, and block style is okay to use, but isn't it just for like, newspaper articles and letters or something? How did you submit yours?

I really want to send my application tonight, and unless I get a solid answer, I will have to sit here, worrying.

Please help.

Just indent the first line of each paragraph like a regular essay. It will look fine. Make sure to justify the margins, however, as it will look sloppy and unprofessional otherwise. I hope this helps.

I think I read on at least one of my applications not to indent paragraphs--it messes up on formatting.

Doesn't it save as PDF or something though? I hate to indent, but I'm afraid that if I don't, I'll come off as looking like some kid that didn't learn one of the most basic rules of english... Dukeclassof09, thanks for the tip on justifying the margins - I only had it right-justified, and it looks much better now. Still a bit worried about the indenting, though.

What do you mean by justifying the margins? How do you do that on Word (and on AppleWorks, if anyone is familiar with it)?

Thanks. :)

On word, you know how you press that thing to make it become centered? and theres like short line, long line, short line, etc? and then theres ones that make it all nice and straight on the right side of the page, or all nice and straight on the left side of the page? there should be one that looks like its all nice and straight on all sides of the page. if it's not there, click that little thingie all the way at the end of the toolbar with the centering thing and such, the button you want to press should look like two sideways arrows and a downwards arrow... click it, click add/remove buttons, and you should see what im talking about...
i get the feeling that i didn't make a word of sense (and i also get the feeling that what i just said wasn't really gramatically correct).... but onto more important things, THOU SHALT NOT POST ON THIS THREAD WITHOUT TELLING ME HOW YOU INDENTED EVERYTHING. so, how'd you indent ? :)

I indented nothing. But my essay is a little strange and unconventional.

If you're submitting your essay through Common App online, I believe you have to just double-space between paragraphs.

Even for the essays I'm printing and mailing, I'm still leaving spaces between paragraphs, not indenting. Those ones are justified as well though.

Justifying in AppleWorks: at the top left of the window, where you can select to right justify, center, etc text, it is the rightmost of four buttons (closest to where you can click to double space).
