preppy

I'm looking for a school that some would consider "preppy" preferably up north near New England but not an Ivy. I am going in to my senior year of high school and I don't have the best grades my Gpa is about a 3.0. Money is a bit of a concern but can be an issue down the line. Any suggestions?

“Money is a bit of a concern but can be an issue down the line”

In my mind preppy and wealth typically go hand in hand. What specifically do you mean by “preppy.”

I always have to laugh at what people consider “preppy.” Lateestees - do you actually attend a private school, or did you derive your concept of “preppy” from TV shows? If the latter, then I imagine some Catholic colleges in the northeast would suit you. There are plenty of small, green campuses full of clean-cut students out there. I suspect that’s what you have in mind, not the schools filled with kids who were kicked out of prep schools for smoking pot. Are you male or female? Is that a weighted or unweighted GPA? How are your test scores and extracurriculars? If you are an actual “preppy,” then your school should have a pretty active college counseling program (it’s one area where private schools far surpass public schools), and you should have been assigned an adviser who can help you with the school’s Naviance site. Incidentally, some preppies do need financial aid - they are often children of prep school or college teachers, or who (like my own kids) come from families who traditionally attended private schools and elite colleges, but whose household incomes have not kept pace with the skyrocketing costs of attendance. My son received a more generous scholarship at his boarding school than he was offered by any college.

Colgate sounds like what you want, but you’re not going to get in with a 3.0.

woogzmama mentioned NE Catholic colleges. How about St. Michael’s College in Vermont or St. Anselm College in New Hampshire?

Here in Ohio, our public Miami University is quite preppy. It’s nickname is “J.Crew U.” :-"

@soze It’s likely that the OP will not be able to afford Colgate.

OP, I don’t think you can get preppy at a low cost.

Preppy colleges are usually filled with upper middle class and wealthy students because the tuition is very high. Also, they are usually very selective. Your GPA would probably keep you out of preppy schools

OP, you won’t get a good answer until you explain what you personally mean by “preppy.” For some, it indicates a type of fashion and nothing more. For other, it suggests a world view, and is almost always intended as an insult. (E.g., “Oh, your family breeds racehorses? That’s, like, soooo preppy.”) Perhaps you are looking for a small liberal arts college with big lawns and old buildings?

The most easly distinguished sign of a preppy enviornment is that the gentlemen wear polo shirts with “popped” collars. Which also IMHO is a clear sign of douchbaggery, but that’s just my $0.02. :)

I have been around preppy types my whole life. One thing that you can take to the bank is that the real ones never refer to themselves or their lifestyles as “preppy.” They are called that by others. So who knows what the OP wants.

Would Bennington College fit the bill (assuming the OP can qualify for aid)?

OP needs to chime in here. I doubt that Bennington fits his or her concept of “preppy,” and it is probably an academic reach. I suspect that UVM (full of skiers), Hobart (also a reach, probably, but very “white-bread”), Trinity (a real reach, unless OP has strong test scores and ECs, and the GPA is unweighted), etc. are schools that would be appealing. Drew, in NJ, might be a possibility, although Greek life is close to nonexistent there. If a male student wants an active Greek scene and a lot of school spirit, southern colleges might be more promising. A lot of schools that come to mind immediately in the Northeast (e.g. Dartmouth) will be completely out of reach academically.

Preppies are often “wannabees” who do not come from prosperous families but wish project a specific image. Seriously doubt that “popped collars” are worn by the children of multi-millionaires.

Plenty of preppies at public universities. Miami University here in Ohio is well known for this, but also throughout the South you will find plenty of preppies at places like Auburn, and Ole’ Miss, and LSU. In fact, I suspect that more students match the preppy image in the South than anywhere else (full disclosure, I went to a state university in the South). Few of those even went to a “prep school.”
