Hey guys, quick question.

So, I'm taking General Chemistry I at Irvine Valley College this summer and want to enroll in General Chemistry II in the Fall at another college (Maybe SMC). Obviously, I can't provide a transcript of my General Chemistry I grade to SMC right now because the class hasn't started. Which means, I can't enroll in General Chemistry II there due to the prerequisite G.Chem I not being fulfilled in their systems. So is there a way I can waive the General Chemistry I prerequisite without having to wait until my summer class is done? I fear, the class may be full by the time I get a chance to enroll. I heard some schools have something called "Prerequisite Override request forms" or "Prerequisite Challenge Request forms"( I know for sure SMC has this one.) So is my situation valid in order to use one of these? Sorry if this may sound confusing. If something is unclear, I'll try to clear it up. Any info regarding this is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Get a friend to hold for you or somehow try to prove that you are taking it at IVC.

^ I can prove I’m taking it at IVC just by printing out a class schedule, but I don’t really know if that is enough to waive a prereq.

It doesn’t hurt to try.

My friend tried to do what your attempting to do and they wouldn’t let him enroll in his class (in this case Calculus 1) until the class was complete and he could provide a transcript with the grade he got in the class. Your CC might be different but CC’s can be a real hassle about pre-reqs sometimes.

^ -.- Yeah I know. It’s stupid. It causes people in my situation to waste a semester because the class is full by the time they get their grade from the prereq class.

I found this on the SMC Catalog

Students who have not completed a prerequisite or corequisite course at Santa Monica College (or at another college or university) and believe they should be exempted from the course may submit a Prerequisite Challenge Petition to the appropriate academic department. Prerequisites may be challenged under one or more of the following grounds, and the student bears the initial burden of proof to show that grounds exist for the challenge.

1. The prerequisite has not been established in accordance with the Districts process for establishing prerequisites.
-
The prerequisite is in violation of California Code of Regulations Title 5 §55003.
-
The prerequisite is either unlawfully discriminatory or is being applied in an unlawfully discriminatory manner.
-
The student will be subject to undue delay in attaining the goal of his/her educational plan because the prerequisite course has not been made reasonably available.
-
The student has the ability or knowledge to succeed in the course despite not meeting the prerequisite.
-
The course has specific limitations on enrollment due to being a course that involves intercollegiate competition or public performance, or a course limited to a cohort of students who meet specific qualifications (for example, the qualifications required for participation in the Nursing Program), if no equivalent section is offered, the student would be delayed by a semester or more in attaining the degree or certificate specified in his or her Student Educational Plan, and the course in question is required to complete the degree or certificate.
-
The student seeks to enroll in a course that has a prerequisite established to protect health and safety, and the student demonstrates that he/she does not pose a threat to himself/herself or others.

hopefully my situation will fall under #5.

anyone else have an idea?

Convince a guidance counselor to override the system. I took Calculus (I) without taking either Trig or Precalc.

You just need to find somebody who A) Likes you, and B) Is willing to employ a certain moral flexibility when it comes to policy and procedure. :)
