Hey,

I have taken General CHemistry I at Los Angeles City College and plan to take General Chemistry II at Santa Monica College. I plan to transfer into UCLA in Fall of 2006. Would there be any trouble transfering the general chem?

Yeah thats fine. U will have to bring in ur transcript showing that u took chem 1 to SMC to let u to enroll in chem 2, called chem 12 down there. Take Arnold, Martinez, or Kline. Classes there are pretty challenging.

i am assuming LACC is on the semester system

Oh cool, do you go to SMC? I hear that supposedly some science professors make their courses more challenging than UCLA courses.

yes. Most of the teachers there have taught at Berkeley and other top schools. Three got their PhD from MIT.

Some teachers are teaching at UCLA and SMC at the same time b.c they are not far from each other.

Let me tell you, If u enroll in Kline or Anderson, getting an A is extremely dificult.

U'll learn a ton though.

that is cool. I might also concurrently enroll in Organic I while taking CHem II in the Fall. What chem level are you taking?

woah, you guys can actually do that? The school allows you to take General Chem II and Organic Chem I concurrently? If I am not mistaken, isn't Gen Chem II a prerequisite to get into Organic Chem I? How can you do that? Haha, sorry I am just curious...

Just a thought rahulkghosh:

Personally, I wouldn't recommend anybody take two 5-unit courses in one semester (assuming each of your Chem classes is worth 5 units) especially if they're on the same subject. O Chem took up most of my study time, but that's just me :) Take your time if you can. I think Gen Chem II is not a prereq to O Chem at my cc coz someone had to repeat it and started O Chem at the same time. Then again, my cc is not very strict with prereqs.

Uh... don't know really. I mean, I have that planned plus a load of other classes. Whatever, oh well. I know at LACC you could do that. Pre-requisites aren't enforced.

um i wouldn't take both at the same time if i were u

BTW, i am taking chem 12 (chem 2) right now which will end in less than 5 days from now.

rahulkghosh, I took GenChem2 lec/lab and OChem1 lec/lab in one semester, against my school's prereq policy. I had to beg for TPTB to let me do it. But I had to do it if I wanted to transfer by fall05, and I had a 4.0 before then. Still, you shouldn't do it unless it's absolutely worth the risk. My 4.0 went down to a 3.54 because of that semester (I was taking Bio1 lec/lab and English that semester, as well).

I was thinking about a situation like biochemist12's when I wrote:

I tried to jumble up the classes a little when I was in cc. My schedule would go something like this: Gen Chem, Physics, Calculus. Just a thought. Maybe if you feel confident taking Gen Chem and O Chem together then go for it. Everyone's different :) If i could do it all over, I still wouldn't take those two Chem classes together because 12 hours of lab/week would just kill me right there. :)

suzzie,

I agree, at my cc, ochem and general chem are 9 hrs each, total of 18.

CC recomend that u spend 2 hrs for every hr of lecture, of course not many do that, but still those are two of the toughest classes available at most CC, generally speaking.

I don't know if anyone would recomend that especially at 14.

I think i was 8 or 9th grade at 14, definitly not thinking about going to 2 CC and CSULA.

have times changed that much :)

dang, 14? Wops. I say take it easy. :)
