Prescreen results

sopranorose - good luck!! We’ll be rooting for you!

String professor conservatory offered this: if there is a preaudition sample lesson, the teacher wants to see if the student has made changes toward the direction of coaching offered; suggests recording lesson and demonstrate “teachability,” as was written above.

Another precollegiate teacher offered that having a musical sense and “being a nice person” helps, probably because there have been instances of aforementioned “know it all” attitudes among some.

Faculty also wise to sound of premature voice maturation, i.e. using a technique which suppresses the natural voice, taught to students to get their voice to sound bigger, but which instills bad habits, hard to unlearn.

Also, don’t forget, the teachers listening to the audition have also been through sometimes painful episodes of students’ apparently being initially overly impressed, later to be overly disappointed with their training, leading to a change of studio. The ease of working with someone kind of counts.

If I don’t get my results from Eastman today, then I guess I just can’t do them, because I have to schedule my surgery for the 5th. Should I call and just cancel?

Did you call them and explain about the need for a surgical procedure and the timing? Did you speak to someone other than a clerk? Go up the chain of command. You are only asking for information. If the results will be out, there should be no reason for them not to try and accommodate you by at least letting you know if you’ve passed the prescreen. Don’t cancel Eastman until you’ve tried to get answer. Be polite, but persistent.

Without going into medical detail, can you defer scheduling the surgery until Monday?

Eastman, while always late, is usually very accomodating when it comes to looking things up.There is also a new Dean of Admissions there this year, so maybe the “getting to know the system” curve is slowing things down even more… Call the Admissions Office directly and be polite while explaining your needs. If the results are available, there should be no reason why they can’t let you know then.
Remember, this effects the rest of your life; if ESM is a school you are very interested in and your surgery is elective enough to have some scheduling options, don’t cancel until you know for sure.

Eastman also has a VP audition on 2/19. IF you have to have your surgery on the 5th, perhaps you could see if you can sing on the 19th. Did you ever figure out which date you had requested?

Hmmmm. I didn’t get anything from Eastman yet and sopranorose was told that all results would be out by today? Nothing from NEC or Peabody, either. I’m worried…

Shinster, what do you play, sing, or compose? =) And I’m guessing you’re applying for undergrad admission?

Composition undergrad.
I guess it does take them longer since I have to pass the instrumental prescreening in addition to the composition prescreening… meh.

Hello to all and congrats for all the great news so far!
I am wondering if anyone has heard from the New School for prescreens…I read that jazz/shredder mom’s S was in for jazz guitar (congrats to them!), but no other mention that I can see. My son (jazz drumset) has heard from all other schools (yes at NEC, NYU, Harrt, SUNY Purchase, no at Manhattan), and is anxiously sweating this one out. Thanks for all your help/support! This is such a great resource.

Silentcygnet, when/how did your son hear from SUNY Purchase? We haven’t heard a peep (also for jazz drumset. . . )

Called Eastman in the afternoon. The man I talked to absolutely assured me that all results would be out today.

Nothing.

I absolutely had to schedule my surgery.

I’m really very upset about this. Two weeks ago, admissions told me I should recieve the result any day… A week later, they told me by Wednesday, on Thursday, they told me Friday… Obviously this school is completely unorganized and misleading with information. I really can’t express how furious I am. I have been at the computer all day, waiting for this stupid message. I’ll take a freaking ‘no’, I just need an answer.

Now, of course, I’ll get something tomorrow, and I’ll have to not do it, because my surgery is very important and cannot be rescheduled now.

How appalling.

Laura’sDad, My son just heard last Wednesday via email. He has had a cluster of replies in just the last week. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you! So nervewracking…

Sopranorose, so disappointing, irritating, frustrating for you! I would consider this Eastmans loss. Your health is worth everything and I wish you all the best with your surgery. You will most certainly be accepted at the college that is best for you, I truly believe that.

I am so sorry Sopranorose. I know how hard the waiting is. If you get your Eastman email shortly, hopefully they will work with you on an audition date that is compatible with your surgery plans. Good luck with your medical issues.

I feel sure, as others have said, Sopranorose, that when the email comes and you call them about the conflict, they definitely will accommodate you. Just don’t call them “with both barrels loaded.”

D heartbroken over 5 “no’s” and only two auditions left.

Eastave, your D shouldn’t lose hope- it was an incredibly tough year for pre-screening. I never post here, but I also got quite a few rejections already. I’m a violinist, and I applied to 10 schools, six of which were pre-screened. I got five rejections, and passed only at purchase. This was especially disconcerting because I study with a teaher on faculty at mannes, and I am taking a gap year to prepare for that audition. After I didn’t pass mannes’ pre-screening, I found out that this year there was an exceptionally large amount of well-qualified applicants. Your D should know that she is definitely not alone, and that these things are very subjective. Good luck to her on the remaining auditions!

easteve - your D’s result seem baffling. Correct me if I’m wrong, but she got a no from Peabody and a yes from Eastman? I know that prescreen results can seem arbitrary, but that makes no sense to me.

I’m sorry your D is heartbroken. I know that breaks your heart too.

Renee Fleming, local to Rochester did not get accepted to Eastman for undergrad…she did her undergrad at SUNY Potsdam, Eastman for Masters and studied in Germany and at Juilliard. The winner of this year’s vocal performance competition at Eastman did her undergrad at Brigham Young University, the second place is a current Eastman senior (was at BUTI with my d) who was Presidential Arts Scholar and had leading role at Aspen last summer- a very accomplished and talented young woman. The third place was someone who did undergrad at Houghton College, small upstate NY school-although with a strong music dept…

bookmama - so true. I have researched the undergrad degrees of many of the successful young up and comers, and I have come to the conclusion that it doesn’t matter where you go as long as you have a competent teacher who doesn’t hurt your voice. I have to Google some of the schools represented by the Met council winners because I have never heard of them.

For those who may be concerned about audition results, and want to add a few more applications, a few good schools with later or rolling deadlines and later auditions are: Oklahoma City University, Westminster Choir College, Loyola New Orleans. I’m referring to voice, though some of these may work for other instruments. There must be more, and there may be a thread somewhere listing them. Good luck to all–this sure can be stressful, full of disappointments and frustrations.
