Prescreenings

For the record- we didn’t do my D’s professionally either-we did the cd at her teacher’s studio and a friend with good (but not fancy) equipment recorded the dvd simultaneously. I’m just saying that if you are really in a bind you might do them that way (professionally).

Also, for Oberlin early action it says on the website that you can find out by the 15th of December whether you are accepted to the conservatory, not accepted to the conservatory, or deferred for consideration later in the pool. So you can find out that you are in- but can’t find out if you are also in the college (for double degree). My D is also applying for double degree there and it would be nice to possibly find out about the conservatory early. It is also nice to get an audition or 2 under your belt before January :)

You CAN easily do the recording, both dvd and audio only, yourself using a Zoom Q3 HD recorder. That thing is amazing. it uses flash memory (like your digital camera) and is easily transferred to your pc for uploading or burning. If I can figure it out, anyone can. $300 online with a little accessory kit, or you can probably get one at a music store like Ken Stanton or something like that.

I liked handling it myself, less people to try to coordinate!

Wondering when we can expect to hear about the prescreening results. Does anyone know when we can expect them to invite us to the live audition if we’ve made it into that pool of candidates?

The timing of the responses to prescreenings varies: some schools have sent theirs out, but most schools send theirs out in January. Usually you will get them about 4 to 8 weeks prior to the audition date. If you search past years’ posts for your specific schools, you will often get an approximate idea. I believe that my son got his prescreen responses to Juilliard, NEC, CIM, and Colburn in January. The Colburn was somewhat later than the others because the audition date there was late March while the others were late January to early March.

January seems so late when many auditions start around January 21st (late, at least, for scheduling airline tickets…). I suppose they either have to decide and notify before the semester break or after… ugh!

I notice in another thread that CIM has already released some prescreen results, so perhaps releases will be earlier at some schools. I would think that for a Jan. 21 audition, most schools would try to get confirmations out to students prior to the holidays.
