Presidential Global Scholar Question

I received something in the mail today telling me that I was designated as a presidential global scholar. From what I have heard, NEU is bureaucracy- heavy, so I worry that doing the wrong thing might cost me the $6000 award for room and board and similar costs.

From their website, it sounds as if I am already a scholar; I don't have to do anything until I actually get an international co-op and want the money. However, I do not know - I would like a few other opinions.

Thanks!,

You need to maintain a 3.5 GPA

There’s bureaucracy at every school, and northeastern has gotten somewhat better than it used to be. I wouldn’t worry about losing the scholarship. And I believe that you are correct that you don’t have to do anything until you have an international co-op. When you get close to that time, check in with the people in charge of the scholarship to see what paperwork they need from you at that point. Otherwise, just keep your grades up as rgosula said and you shouldn’t have to worry about anything in the meantime.

My son got this yesterday. At first I thought it was a little odd since there is no way he would already have an internship lined up. Then I realized it’s probably just another enticement to get him to accept their offer.

Yeah, it’s an incentive. It means that he’s guaranteed this 6000 if he ever decides he wants to go on an international co-op. I had it as well, and it’s some peace of mind knowing you don’t have to worry as much about expenses when choosing an international co-op.

Nanotech my daughter received the same offer. Did you take advantage of the abroad opportunity? If not do you know anyone who did? Just trying to figure out if the scholarship covers the entire cost or simply a portion of what you can expect to pay.

Honors students are guaranteed the $6000, which is a significant portion of what you’d be paying and would cut costs drastically, probably making it as cheap or cheaper than living in Boston for co-op. It’s not the entire cost, though. Non-honors students can apply for the scholarship and can receive any award up to $6000.

I did go on an international co-op and use the scholarship. I was lucky and my co-op abroad also paid well (1500€/month), so I was very well set financially. Your costs will very dramatically depending on where you are (rural Africa vs Tokyo is a really big difference), so it’s hard to estimate how far the scholarship would go in the absence of any other co-op payment.

My daughter is currently on an international coop, and received the scholarship. Hers is unpaid, as many international coops are . She is a computer engineering major, so it wasn’t major specific - more country specific. But she really wanted this position abroad. The scholarship covered the program, which includes housing and some travel. Over that cost was airline tickets and food. She is an honors student, so it was very easy to get - just filled out the form.
