Presidential Honors Scholars Program 2010

we’ re in the same situation…we called today and NYU FAO responded the same thing ie no merit aid despite acceptance to CAS Presidential Scholars Program…will most likely end up declining NYU.

It seems odd that the financial aid office said there is no scholarship. On the NYU’s web site under the Presidential Honors Scholars description it says “Scholars admitted as freshmen directly from high school receive financial assistance in the form of a scholarship”.

They forgot to add the wording “need based”. Ridiculous; a financial aid award based on need is NOT a scholarship, it’s financial aid.

Oh and BTW, I may only be a yokel who graduated from UF, but I know the definition of scholarship: ‘financial aid provided to a student on the basis of academic merit’. I think anyone middle class would be hard pressed to attend NYU.

It’s unfortunate that “forgetting” to say “need based” gave false hope to some kids who would love to go to NYU, but needed the extra scholarship to do it. Middle class… ggrrrrr.

Did anyone accepted into the honors program get a scholarship? If so, what was your EFC? Does anyone know the availability of purely merit based scholarships that you can apply for as a freshman?

Gator: I know of no merit based scholarships that students apply for that are directly through NYU.

You mention that your D did not get any financial aid. Was your EFC above the cost of NYU?

If your EFC shows that you should qualify for some financial aid, I would appeal her financial aid award (or lack of it) and ask for an academic scholarship based on her getting into Scholars.

However, this will only work if your EFC is lower than the cost of NYU and you show some need. If your EFC is above the cost of NYU, then you will not get anything for Scholars. D is in Steinhardt Scholars and she did not get any money for it either.

Luckily she recieved a talent merit aid award which helps somewhat. But unfortunately CAS gives no merit aid, so unless you can show some need, you are probably out of luck.

VERY FUNNY THING HAPPENED.

Well I’m an international, and after choking on my cereal at finding out how much NYU would cost (I got my acceptance March 24th) I decided that I probably can’t make it there - my parents make less than US$40000 a year.

I JUST got my CAS Presidential Honors Scholars letter today. May 4th. After I returned the reply form saying that no, sorry, I can’t go there because I can’t afford it. Which was due May 1st, incidentally. Haha.

So basically I’m in a huge dilemma - obviously I qualify for the need-based component that you guys are suggesting exists with this program that I’ve been offered. But I already said no. Which will definitely be a ‘yes’ if some money came my way from NYU…

I guess I’ll call them tonight. Who knows, I might /still/ get nothing, especially since I’m an international >< I really hate all this anxiety in the college applications process. It just gets me down, especially since all I’m looking for is four years of great education and a wider world-view if I get to go to the US. (:

I’m not sure if international students qualify for need-based aid.

Precisely; we don’t. That’s why I thought this would be my only chance. Turns out it isn’t, I called them last night and they’ve since amended that ambiguous bit on the website.

Oh well, no NYU for me…
