Presidential Scholar's Award (or whatever you call it)

So the criterion for being a Presidential Scholar is SAT score, not PSAT score, right?

Yes.
But it's not that important anyway. I got nominated for it and didn't even bother to do the essays. Seriously, who the hell wants to meet George Bush?
Besides, I think you get picked after application deadlines.

SAT or ACT...

there's no cash prize though. you "win" the chance to meet bush, haha.

there's nothing funny about bashing the president of the united states. show some respect.

2400 or 35 or 36 right????????????????

I don't think it's a matter of bashing "the president" per se, but the actual person. You don't have to respect the president to respect the U.S.A.

"
The Scholars travel to Washington, D.C. each June as guests of the program for National Recognition Week: five days of educational, celebratory and fellowship activities. Scholars participate in seminars, lectures and workshops with government officials, elected representatives, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people; perform community service; and attend cultural events and ceremonies held in their honor. During the week they forge friendships that often last a lifetime. The week culminates in a White House-sponsored event at which the Scholars are awarded the Presidential Medallion."

Sounds pretty cool to me, especially considering I've never been to D.C. (lame, I know). Plus, I believe it's all expenses paid. Unfortunately, I don't think a 33 ACT will warrant an invite. :(

For me, I'd say, WOW! all expense paid trip twenty minutes down the highway! considering the gas prices today, WOW!

It is a great honor.

me want it

I want it!! ooo !!

In general, I think it's either a 2400 SAT or a 35or36 ACT.

How hard is it to get from finalist (or whatever it's called when you meet the SAT/ACT score requirements) to actual presidential scholar winner? How many % move from meeting the score requirement to winning?

I just visited the website and it's confusing. What's the difference between Pres Scholar candidate and Pres Scholar finalist? What are the requirements for candidate?

talkaboutambition, respect is earned; it doesn't come with the position.

I wanna it righta nowa.

amb3r, "Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars...The selection of approximately 2,600 academic candidates is made based on SAT and ACT scores."

Presidential Scholars Program Fact Sheet

It's not that hard to get, a lot of people don't turn in their apps once they're picked to participate. Also, you don't necessarily need a 2400. Depending on your state, a 2370 might be good enough to qualify you.

Oh, is THAT all! (smile).

My friend got nominated last year, and she had a 2350.

The process actually disregards the Writing portion of both tests (whew!).

If you are in the eligibility ballpark, it might be useful for you to know that the ACT basis is the sum of scores (up to 144), rather than the composite score. In MI last year, an ACT sum of 141 was needed for girls to be eligible (despite the rather low cut-off for NMSF in MI). 1590 Cr + M on SAT was equated to 140 ACT sum.

Slightly off topic, but Bush actually seems like a nice guy when you meet him, but in real life, he seems shorter and a bit older/more tired than he does on TV or in photos.
