and someone who doesnt even live and go to school in texas since 9th grade was a candidate. hax

bigred - It seems like a 36 total in a single sitting should qualify. Are you sure you checked the box that said the testing people could disclose your scores? If not, the Presidential Scholars website has instructions for asking them to consider you now.

FWIW, your classmates with SAT 2300's probably did very well on the math and critical reading, which are the only sections considered for the SATs. In many of the more populated states you need perfect 800s to be nominated.

Congrats to all who were honored. My son is on the list, along with several of his best friends and some kids he knew in elementary school. Small world...

Wow... I haven't even heard of this program until today, but it turns out I'm on the list! It's only me and 3 other people from my school though. I don't think anyone really cares, but I'm from Oklahoma and have 35-35-35-35.

But I don't think there's that much competition here. Congratulations to everyone nominated!

i took the act june 2007. i dont recall the checking box but i would have let act release my info cuz my name was mentioned in the paper once. i didnt get a perfect 36 though. mine was 36, 36, 36, 35. I just dont see how a 2350 is considered higher than a 36. but its too late now lol

and someone on that list from tx is from a junior high, not senior high. i thought u had to be graduating in 2008 to be a candidate?

bigreddawgie: 143 total points for ACT should have done it. Only 1600 CR/M SAT would have been higher. S had 143 ACT and 1560 SAT in Florida and he's on the list. Definitely check with the Presidential people.

Are SAT/ACT scores considered again for presidential scholar semifinalist selection, or are they unimportant distinguishing factors between candidates now?

What's the difference between the selection of semifinalists and the selection of scholars? Why are there two stages - are they looking at different factors in each?

but the thing is, my friend who also got a 36 isnt on the list. maybe they didnt look at the act? at the very bottom of the list, it only says college board, not act. the ppl that i know on the list def got in cuz of their sat scores, none of them scored perfect. and texas isnt know to be a smart state like new jersey or ny
who should i contact for this? its not a big deal, but it would be nice lol

This is from the FAQ on the website:

"I'm not listed as a Candidate, but my test score should be high enough to qualify.

If you are a US Citizen, graduating in the current program year, and received this test score in one sitting, please call us at 319-341-2PSP (319-341-2777), and be prepared to provide us with your state of legal residence, full name, gender, the date you took the test, and a copy of your test report. We will verify the information and determine whether you are eligible to apply. If eligible, you will be mailed an application that has to be returned by February 21, 2008. If the application receipt deadline has passed, you will not be able to apply, even if your score is high enough."

bigred - you should definitely call - nothing to lose. I was looking at the thread from last year on CC, and lots of kids were candidates based on their ACT scores. It certainly could happen for you.

amb3r - good questions, but I don't know if you'll find an answer. The application forms focus on things like making a difference in the community, leadership, being a generally good person, special talents, etc. I assume these factors enter in at all stages of selection.

I think they didn't consider the ACT at all, something weird like that? Because that list is definitely missing kids.

I'm also the parent of a student who got a 36 and is not on the list. Kind of surprising.

thanks rainmama. i will def call tomorrow.

I'm on the list but there's an error with my high school - who do I contact?

I forgot to add this earlier, but they're definitely looking at ACT scores (I never took the SAT but I am still listed there).

I think they are comparing apples to oranges.
SAT: only verbal and Math
ACT: all four sections including science

They should a use system similar to what University of California is using- UC Score. That method equates a score which is fair to both SAT and ACT takers.

I think they do convert the SAT scores to ACT scores

I just spoke with Presidential Scholars and learned that in our state, the qualifying score for ACT was a total of 144 (36-36-36-36). That leaves out the 36 scorers who got there with scores between 35.5 and 36. ACT rounds up, so you can get a 36 composite with a 36-36-36-35, a 36-36-35-35 or a 36-36-36-34.

^^What state is this? That's interesting. NY/MA/CA/VA/NJ? I think the comparisons are unfair. You can get 2-3 wrong on CR and get an 800 for a total of 1600, but for the ACT, you basically can't get anything wrong if you want a 36/36/36/36.

^^Illinois.
