How do you know if you're eligible for this scholarship?
Or do you even apply for it?
Is it even a scholarship or just a prestigious award?

I tried finding information on this page, but I had to sift through a lot of reading, and even then I couldn't find specific answers to my questions. I've heard it's a prestigious award that is given to the top 2 students in each state with the highest SATs... but I read nothing about that on the website. Anybody know?

At the awards ceremony at our high school students were award the Presidential Scholars Awards. They had to have completed 4 years each of English, Social Studies, Science, Math, and Foreign Language to achieve this status. Students received a certificate attesting to their achievement signed by the president (a copy). There is also a middle school presidential scholars award for completing English, Social Studies, Math, Science and Foreign Language all years of middle school. I believe there is a minimum GPA also. DD received this in middle school...we think that is how she got on all the college mailing lists!!

Academic Presidential Scholar candidates are the top 20 males and top 20 females in each state with the highest SAT or ACT scores in a single sitting.
They have to write several essays and fill out lots of paperwork. Eventually there are 121 students selected. It isn't a scholarship but rather an honor -- winners are honored at a ceremony in Washington D.C. My son was a candidate last year based on his SAT score but he decided not to apply to be a semifinalist because of the numerous essays required.

There is also an Arts Presidential Scholar program - information is on the websites mentioned above.
