Presidential Scholars

There are 70 full in-state tuition scholarships through Maximus (Medalist) but only 10 Presidentials that are full in-state tuition plus room, board and fees. Apart from these two, National Merit Finalists in the top 10% of their class and declaring OSU first choice can also receive full-state tuition plus $4,500. That is the closest I've seen to the 10 full rides.

thanks PLP. do you happen to know how many NMF award (full-state tuition plus $4,500) does OSU give out every year?

That question was asked about five different ways at Maximus last weekend. The financial aid people said they had to be careful regarding the language they used in that they couldn't "guarantee" the NMF scholarships, but they said that historically ALL NMFs that met the class rank criteria and declared OSU first choice have received the scholarship.

They said that if there was an unusually large number of NMFs it is conceivable that there would have to be an evaluation, however, that had not been the case historically.

As a recent example, they said that all 127 NMFs admitted to OSU in the class which began last fall had received the scholarship.

Judging from the audience curiosity on the subject, there were quite a few NMFs in Columbus last weekend.

While I suppose that a Presidential is a possibility (but not very likely), my Son is counting on the NMF scholarship.

-PP

yeah, what they said ^

Hey Mary - What did you think about Maximus? I thought it was a remarkably well executed program. OSU continues to surprise me with how well they do the recruiting thing.

PP

I also think OSU does an incredible job of organizing and making individuals feel welcome. I summarized our Maximus experience on the "Sooo, how was Maximus thread."

I will be really glad when all of this is over. D is my oldest so I've never been through this before. When I went to college, I applied early decision to Washington University in St. Louis because my HS guidance counselor thought I would like it!

Did they say they'd be calling the Presidential finalists on the 21st and 22nd?

First time through this with my S as well. Don't remember my own experience that clearly. Too long ago (30 yrs). :)

Finalist calls on 2/21 and 2/22. That's what I recall as well.

I know it's prideful to hope D is one of 30 out of 800... but I'm going crazy here waiting.

I believe it is 2/22 & 2/23 for invitation for interview process of 25-30

3/19 for Medialist notification

over 1000 invitaions to compete in the Medialist I believe were sent for those receiving the Maximus.

Approximately 900 Medialist participants ~ up from what was expected

I believe also for those that get the "call", they receive the Medialist even if they do not receive the Presidential.

Is this all correct?

"I believe it is 2/22 & 2/23 for invitation for interview process of 25-30" >> You may be right about 2/22 and 2/23. I didn't write it down. I know that 2/22 was one of the days, but I'm cloudy on whether it was 2/21 or 2/23 for the other. Old age, I guess. :)

"3/19 for Medialist notification" >> I don't recall exactly, but that sounds about right since the Presidential interviews are the weekend of 3/3.

"over 1000 invitaions to compete in the Medialist I believe were sent for those receiving the Maximus." >> I don't remember hearing this, but I was drinking coffee at the time.

"Approximately 900 Medialist participants ~ up from what was expected" >> I do remember them saying there were about 900, but I don't recall what they said they expected. I know there were fewer participants than in past years (about 1,500) but they raised the bar this year.

"I believe also for those that get the "call", they receive the Medialist even if they do not receive the Presidential." >> That is true. If you are invited to interview for the Presidential, the Medalist is already in the bag.

They also said in our session that they would be awarding 70 Medalists. If the Medalist was offered and the recipient declined to attend elsewhere (although I don't know why you would decline free money), they would offer it to someone else until all 70 were offered.

-PP

I just called my son....home again for fog and ice.

He said definately 2/22 & 2/23 for the "call"

I believe they offer more than 70 expecting some to decline the offer. Those being offered the Medialist or Presidential Scholarships are most likely also beng offered scholarships from other universities. At least this is how I understood it from the parent meeting.

But I am also getting old.

I had 22nd and 23rd in my notes. In view of the missed days due to weather, it wouldn't surprise me if it is on the 23rd.

Did anyone get the call on Thursday? We did not.

Nope. Didn't really expect it, but it would have been nice. We'll still keep our fingers crossed. Good luck!

no call either

I'm losing hope.

BTW, here's what I said after Maximus:

The Presidential Scholar finalists will be called Thursday and Friday, February 22-23. All finalists who don't get selected will get one of the 70 Medalist (full instate tuition) awards. The Medalist letters will go out in late March.

LATE MARCH???

I called our admission rep and asked him to check if the selection had been made.

Yes, all Presidential finalists have been called. The phone did not ring here.

BUT I wanted to pass along this -- he said the Medalist awards would be notified next week.

Nothing here either. Oh well.

i didnt get it either....kinda upset but i found out i like another college just as much (3 days up there)...and its a little stronger for what im majoring in

MaryTN ~

I just called myself, the lady that answered said The Medalist Scholarship recipants would be notified via USPS week of March 19. That is three weeks away, I like your timeline better.
