presidential scholars

i recently went to the presidential scholars website and i need some clarification!
do all seniors with a certain sat/act score get letters to apply?
what is the cutoff sat/act score?
i'm sure there are more criteria for acceptance. does anyone know what they are?
do you have to be involved in the arts as well?

thanks for any clarifications!!

I believe that the top 20 males and top 20 females per state are nominees, on scores earned in one sitting. I guess they do some kind of conversion to equate the ACT and SAT. Nominees who wish to pursue it can fill out an application. There is also an application that must be filled out by someone at the student’s school. Semifinalists are chosen, and then one PS of each gender per state. At least that’s my recollection of the process.

The presidentialscholars.org website isn’t very informative.

You need this one: [U.S</a>. Presidential Scholars Program](U.S. Presidential Scholars Program)
It spells everything out.

““are U.S. citizens;
graduate or receive a diploma between January and August of the current program year; and
score exceptionally well on either the SAT of the College Board or the ACT of the American College Testing Program, based on tests taken during the two-year window that begins in September, 2007 and runs through October, 2009, (for the recognition cycle concluding in June, 2010).
For the arts component …””

no cutoff info or anything…

Well, if it is the top 20 males and the top 20 females by state, the cutoff will vary by state.

I read the site - and I’m confused. Is there an academic section AND an arts section of finalists … or are these only artists - who happen to score well?

There are two different types of awards.

The artist selection process is completely separate.

For the academics-based scholars, the initial nomination depends exclusively on scores for a single sitting of ACT or SAT (Math and CR only, last time I checked). In some states, that requires a perfect scores, in others, a 35 ACT or a 1570 SAT might work. After that, there’s an application process.

You get chosen from your scores. You don’t apply. Once you are chosen, there’s a package to fill out by the student and the school.

thanks! you guys know everything!
