Press Release: NYU Receives Record Number of Freshman Applications

NYU > The Office of Public Affairs > NYU Receives Record Number of Freshman Applications

Looks like the competition is even tougher this year.

im screwed

Amazing in this economic climate that so many would apply where the FA is less than good.

^^I second that…crap.

This is an annual event at most selective or desirable schools. Applications are up each year over the year before. Kids are applying to more and more schools; without regard to whether they might be accepted.

Go look at some of the stats profiles on this board. You have perople who:

1) tend to get in most selective schools
2) People who look for mostly matches and get in, with a few aspirant choices
3) People who get rejected from lots of schools because they have one safety, one aspirant choice and 6 “I haven’t got a chance at getting in”.

I don’t know how that last group does it. I wouldn’t want to open all those rejection letters.

I also wonder if they’re including the NYU-Poly numbers into these stats, since we’re supposed to be “merged” by now, or whatever.

Also, with such small increases (as compared to the CRAZY increased at U Chicago, Brown, etc.)…it may well just be the number of students. Every year I think a few more kids realize they are in a position to go to college. But…this is the end of the Mini-baby-boom. The last kids of the last original baby boomer kids. So actual student population is expected to drop in another year or two…this is the apex.

Well…unfortunately we’re part of that apex :/

Yes (part of the apex), but, a school that CAN accommodate a slightly larger student body WILL accommodate it with “like” acceptance rates. Esp. NYU…which is definitely a “show me the money” kinda school. Though I’m guessing they’re all awfully full right now (housing, classes, etc.). Kind of a sucky spot to be in, for sure.

I don’t think that includes NYU-Poly, just fyi. They have separate application processes, evaluations, etc. Pretty sure there’s been no regular correspondence between the relative admissions committees. Hence. NYU is simply harder to get into… :/

But isn’t NYU growing as well?

In this flimed interview from a few months ago, NYU’s VP of Enrollment discusses the record number of both applications and enorllment at NYU. He attributes it to “[growing] popularity and a conscious decsion on the univerity’s part to grow at some level… we were interested in being a little larger this year, and we are.”

The interview can only be watched by NYC locals though. If you can watch it, I highly recomment it.
