Coming out of high school i went to a 4 yr college and didn't take it seriously. I ended up getting 2 d's 2 c's. After a yr off of school working, i went back to a community college where i am currently. I have a 3.9. My question is how much does the first college's grades affect my chances of transferring?

bump.. anyone?

They will be viewed by prospective schools and thus hurt your application, but how seriously depends on how old they are as well as where you are applying and where you went to school.

obviously that will weigh very heavily on your app...if you could not succeed at your first 4 year and had to move down to a cc, potential 4 year transfer schools would not look fondly upon your record as it does not indicate the kind of motivation or ability to succeed at their school

In my experience, it depends. My first attempt at college was over ten years ago. It's been explained to me that whether those grades were great/poor doesn't matter nearly as much as compared with my CC grades NOW. My ECs THEN don't matter nearly as much as my ECs now, etc etc.
