Princeton 2019 SCEA Hopefuls Thread

@hopefulperson – it’s the oft-asked “is there a quota for my HS” question. The answer is NO. PTon accepts whom they want, from where they want.

Certainly that QB person may be accepted and you may be rejected. But it’s not b/c you both attended the same HS. If PTon found yours, the QB applicant’s and the next 5 kids from your HS this year to be spectacular, they’d offer admissions to all seven of you.

The idea of quotas would imply PTon needs to “set-aside” slots to other schools – to spread the wealth in order to keep high schools happy. They don’t care what high schools think of them. PTon decides on what’s best for PTon, not what some HS counselor or principal thinks. It could accept seven from your school this year and none for the next twenty years and PTon wouldn’t blink an eye.

We have students in our school who misuse the whole questbridge advantage. The parents have cash based businesses and therefore the kids qualify for reduced lunch. And definitely the kid who got admitted last year as questbridge was not as competitive as the others. But for some reason Pton admitted all four top kids and we think it is because they admitted the questbridge student. So my observation is, if you are better applicant than the questbridge kid in your school, then that is an advantage for you.

@nolasaxman: Yes, Lawrenceville prep does have the reputation of sending many kids to Princeton but 27 seems to be a very large number since the total admits from NJ itself is only 200 or so. Also I don’t think that is because Pton has connections with Lawrenceville prep but rather it is the other way round. Unlike public school counselors, private school counselors work very hard to prepare the student for their college of choice. They start early and figure out what each college wants and make that information available to the students.

@nolasaxman‌, in all likelihood, Lawrenceville students are the children of Pton faculty. Probably, if faculty kids have the grades and scores, they get in. One of the perks of teaching at Pton.

@jacknophat: Do you think that is true for legacies as well?

How do you guys ask for your interviewer’s address so you can send them a thank you card? I don’t want to be like “Thank you. Where do you live?” lol

@HPClee I just emailed my interviewer a thank you, because I couldn’t think of a way to actually mail him a card without seeming really weird and creepy lol.

@yebhip‌ haha I read that I should mail him a letter but I am in the same situation as you!

Eh, I’m guessing since Princeton was the QB kid’s #4 and not #1, she’ll get something in her top 3 and then I’ll be considered against the other 2 SCEA applicants only. I think they do compare applicants within schools (you can’t compare us to kids at Exeter or Lawrenceville, lol) so hopefully I’ll look good.

Although they don’t say it, quotas do unofficially exist for most schools save a few, such as top 10 privates like phillips exeter. Considering like 10-20 people from exeter and andover get into Princeton who are clearly not as qualified as some other applicants, it’s all gray area.

how much do you guys think a sibling legacy would help in the admissions process?

@lordjim Sibling legacy doesn’t help as much, but I guess it’s better than nothing.

LOL it’s better than anything I have, which is nothing. #nohooks

I’m pretty sure my being Asian negates my sibling legacy, lol

Hey guys, when do we know how much financial aid, if any, is awarded to us?

@Jumbotron‌ The financial award is told when you receive the admission offer, so that’s about 15th December (from what’s written on the university website).

Thanks!

Do any alumni interviewers know whether the December 1st deadline for interview reports is a hard deadline or soft deadline? I received my interview notification last night (november 28th), and my interviewer still hasn’t contacted me yet. I doubt he’ll contact me before December 1st, which is two days from today. If December 1st is a hard deadline, does this mean that I’ve already been deferred, and they’ll use the interview report for the RD round? My interview won’t take place in time for the admissions committee to evaluate the interview report for the SCEA round.

Perhaps yo could ask in the current student thread? I don’t know the answer to your question, but I remember when I was reading scea results threads that one person didn’t get an interview for whatever reason and then an adcom suddenly called a few nights before the decision and asked for a phone interview. The person was accepted.
I realize it’s not quite the same though, haha.

I just had my interview today, and mine told me that the report’s due by the 30th, so @Ambitious19‌ i’m not so sure what to say about your situation. Have you been contacted by your interviewer? The notif usually comes an hour or so later.
