Princeton 2019 SCEA Hopefuls Thread

@nolasaxman It can’t be a bad sign. Princeton has been dead silent since I submitted my application. Makes me wonder if they’ve already thrown my app out.

Maybe you’re on the edge of being deferred or accepted?

@ambitious19 Louisiana

Knowing my school, they probably sent my dismal quarter grades in just to screw with me

@nolasaxman that’s awesome! Maybe you’re on the edge of acceptance and princeton just wants to see your current grades to be sure. Do you have an upward trend or any otherwise trend that shows some nuanced inconsistencies in grades over the three years? Any not so great years?

Is a consistent 4.0 better than an upward trend? I didn’t have very good grades in my freshman year, but I’ve managed to improve by at least 2% each year for the past four years.

lol just noticed I got the 666th post.

@mcfrankshc I would think so if it affects your rank especially. On the contrary, however, and I don’t know whether to take this with a grain of salt or not, but my counselor told me that sometimes colleges like to accept those with improvement because it shows that you know how to pull yourself up from your bootstrapsif you don’t do well at the college first. What does everyone think? I can’t believe decisions are coming out in a week argh .

Also, new topic: my school doesn’t rank students, but I’ve heard that colleges try to “force” ranks? What does that mean? Do colleges have access to the GPA distribution in the senior class by any chance?

@Frozengogurt‌ I can’t imagine that a rising curve is better than a constant 4.0. That just doesn’t seem fair.

Also, coming from a school that doesn’t rank, I’m not sure. I do know that on the school report, counselors note how your academic achievement sort of compares like a “High above average” or “Above average” type of multiple-choice question. I don’t think Princeton has access to your entire class’ stats.

@Ambitious19‌ don’t worry! everyone’s pretty much been reviewed already, and they’re hacking at the applications right now, looking for people to cut. Well, all of us should worry (including me…) but we did what we could!

@nolasaxman Princeton asked my counselor today for my IB predicted scores too… Despite the fact that I submitted bunch of AP scores through my app… Super worried cuz my predicted scores will look much worse compared to my grades

My school doesn’t rank but in the school report they say what gpa’s make up each decile. It also says that 3% of my class (9 people) has a gpa over 4.5. So I know I’m in at least the top 3% and so do the schools I’m applying to but I have to officially say my school doesn’t rank.

@erik1125e That’s true, but I’m just saying that admissions officers are human and since it’s a given that GPA isn’t everything, perhaps it is possible that an upward trend (I mean from like a 3.7 or 8 to 4.0 not from 3.0 to 4.0) may be beneficial since it could enhance the narrative weaved in your application or show some positive character trait. No matter what, a 4.0 is still the best, but I’m saying that if you have a strong upward trend, it could compensate for some not-so-great freshman or sophomore grades and with a combination of killer ECs and essays, you could be just as good as someone with a consistent 4.0 for admission

@hanslee0409 that sounds more like a good thing than bad - you’re still relevant which means that you’re file hasn’t been thrown into the deferral pile. I don’t think Princeton has contacted my counselor since I sent out my app :frowning:
Wow, I didn’t know admissions office work through the weekends…

@hanslee0409‌ your counsellor can reach you on the weekends?

@alfawarlord: How do you have such accurate information. I thought those committee meetings are super secret affairs. Won’t the ad coms get into trouble if someone finds out that they are leaking information?

this is the last full week of waiting guys! we can do this! Whether deferred or not, I just want to know my faith :)

***fate

If Princeton has contacted my guidance counselor since the end of October when I submitted, she hasn’t told me a single thing about it :(( Am I already deferred/rejected??? I’ll talk to the kid admitted SCEA last year from my HS (he goes there now…so jealous) and see if his former counselor told him anything

Does anyone know how princeton looks at grades?? I heard that they don’t explicitly look at freshman year (though its factored into rank, of course)
So for SCEA are our sophomore and junior year grades primarily taken into consideration??

I hope so lol :(

@ladieth i think everything is taken into account, but perhaps with more weight on junior year, then sophomore year, and then freshman year, since junior year is the most recent and most likely to be accurate account of your studies
