Princeton 2019 SCEA Hopefuls Thread

friends of mine find out from Duke & Columbia ED tomorrow–jealous

wait Columbia ED comes out tomorrow? That should be interesting for some of my classmates…

@ilovethecity I didnt know the academic index included AP scores… are you sure?

Lol what’s an academic index

@bill2507733‌ Not entirely sure, but in the book I mentioned, the author said that having good AP scores still gives you a boost when your app is read

@princetonpls just learned about it today. http://www.collegeconfidential.com/academic_index/

@bill2507733‌ Wow very surprised… it gave me a 9/9. But I assume thats most people applying to these colleges huh

@PrincetonPls‌

Congrats! I got a 5/9, but like the side note says, essays, ECs, and URM status are not taken into account.
I saw one person on CC who had a 1900 SAT and now attends Pton

@lb43823‌ mhm. My school is known for its football program, and the rounding policy was put into place to help the D+ kids get up to Cs for eligibility. Little did they know it would provide a nice little safety net for the A-minus’ers on campus. O:-)

Hey everybody, another lurker here. I’m from the SF Bay Area, and I noticed a few bay area/norcal people on this thread. Did anybody else’s school get closed for the storm tomorrow?

Anyways, hoping for good news for us all on Monday!

@Wades23 Unfortunately my school will stay open :frowning: Do you live in the South Bay/Silicon Valley area? I don’t know any schools in this area that are planning to close tomorrow.

@Ambitious19 nope I’m from the East Bay. Maybe you aren’t going to be hit so bad. I’m not really sure how big of a deal the storm is, but either way, at least I get the day off!

@Ambitious19‌, thanks for the reply! But honestly, don’t you think Princeton would consider those scores to be sub-par?

@ingoditrust No, I don’t think Princeton will consider your AP scores to be subpar. Could they have been slightly better? Perhaps. But overall, your scores are pretty solid! Also, your scores will be compared in the context of your school.

Ambitious19 the real MVP slaying questions left and right with her power of admissions knowledge

@Ambitious19‌ “Your scores will be compared in the context of your school”…as in vs. all exam takers schoolwide or all princeton applicants from your school? Which one is it? There’s a huge difference between the two for me.

I’m really not expecting too much, but I hope I at least get deferred so that I’m not completely crushed…Last year, they only rejected 49 people if I remember correctly.

@Ambitious19 So in general applicants are taken in the context of other Princeton applicants from their school? I feel much better if that’s the case.

Eh yes and no. Usually you are compared to your school in general - not just Princeton applicants. Someone applying from a school in rural Wyoming with no APs wont be penalized because they just dont have that opportunity in their school - consequently, if they score lower on the SAT, it could also be due to not having a conducive environment to learning. If you’re from a magnet school in new jersey, you’re probably expected to have taken more APs and done better on tests.

It’s all about doing whatever you can in the context of your school - reaching your potential to whatever it can be.

If that makes sense.

@ScienceDaddy I mean all exam takers schoolwide. Let’s say you receive three 5’s and one 4 on your AP tests. If your school is a historically underperforming one (where the graduation rate is 59% and only 23% of students matriculate to 4 year universities), and not many students take AP classes, being an AP scholar will be a pretty big deal and it may push you over the edge from being deferred to accepted. On the other hand, if your school is full of high-achieving students who are all AP scholars of some sort (AP Scholar w/Distinction, National AP Scholar), your scores won’t be as impressive because you didn’t fully utilize your resources.

@hopefulperson I agree with @PrincetonPls. It all depends on context. So yes, you will be compared directly to people in the same region as you! There’s a reason why admissions officers are assigned by regions, not by the alphabetical order of your last name. It would be funny if one officer was in charge of all the last names starting with A, and another that was in charge of all the last names starting with B! Regional admission officers are the ones that understand your region the most comprehensively.
