@Ambitious19 December 15th for Harvard, so I’m guessing probably that day too. Princeton’s decision last year was also released on the 3rd Monday of December.

Princeton 2019 SCEA deadline today. Now we all just have to wait and see what is the outcome.

“Legacy” and “Hooked” are being discussed often. It is easy to understand “Legacy” means child of alumni. what exactly is “Hooked”?

If a Princeton 2019 SCEA applicant who has a sibling currently attending Princeton undergraduate considers as one form of “Hooked”?

Hello guys. I am from Pakistan and I sent my app yesterday (phew). How long should I wait for an email confirmation? Btw anyone else from Pak here?

Being “hooked” encompasses certain things that make you a compelling candidate, for example first generation college students, high achieving URMs, low income students accomplishing great things in spite of their background. Also I think recruited athletes are “hooked” too. Some other minor hooks include female math/physics/engineer majors and having parents who teach at the school. You’re right, being a legacy simply means that someone in your family has attended the university.

Thanks justlyfe8! Having a specific date makes the wait more bearable!

While we wait for decisions,
what other colleges are you guys applying to?

ambitious19, thanks for the info. We didn’t realize the PIN was something she selected.

Hmm I submitted my SCEA application on Thursday (and my second teacher just got his rec in) - crossing fingers now lol

I was wondering, for the arts supplement, how should the recommendation be sent? Are they supposed to be sent separately (with FERPA waiver)

Hmm well some stats:

2350 SAT (770 math, 780 reading, 800 writing) and 800 Math II and Physics
4.00/4.87 gpa (school doesn’t rank
50/50 on APs
but I have pretty much 0 hooks so…

I submitted my app about a week ago but still no interview notification? Is something wrong?

I sent mine in 2 weeks ago but still have no interview notification…just gotta wait and hope

The interview notifications generally start around mid-November, at least for the interviewers in my area.

LOL submitted!!

@kirito69 It seems like there’s a way to upload the rec with the arts supplement to the Princeton website. I got my recommender to email me the letter, so there’s no FERPA there, but you could probably have your recommender email or mail it directly to the admissions office.

Is it worth bribing my violin teacher to do my rec in 4 days? How much would the rec letter, or lack thereof, count? I guess there’s some mental health stuff I didn’t want to self-report that he could talk about but I don’t want it to look like I’m weak or getting people to make excuses for me.

I think the term “legacy” actually refers to having parents who are alumni of the school. Having a sibling who currently attends certainly seems to be a plus however. In terms of “hooks” I think this is an unofficial term we use to identify any student who might have what we would consider to be a “leg up” in the admissions process. This could include recruited athletes, high achieving URM’s, Questbridge matches etc. It probably varies significantly from school to school…some schools may recruit talented musicians or performers from other arts areas. Some applicants might have an advantage from living in an under-represented area or country. Some might be academic recruits or internationally recognized award winners. Some may be the children of significant donors, faculty of the school or dignitaries. Assembling a class with socio-economic diversity is also a consideration so being a first generation college student and/or coming from a low income background may be given some attention in certain cases.

The difficulty with defining the term “hook” is that it is really our best guess as opposed to being clearly defined by some document published by admissions. What is considered a “hook” at one school may carry very little weight at another.

@ispmoonlife Could I read your papers on “lorentz transformations in hyperbolic time dilation” ?

@hopefulperson I would suggest not sending a rec letter in and letting your violin recording speak for itself. Honestly, there’s a reason why Princeton only recommends sending in 2 teacher recs and a counselor rec- unless the rec from your violin teacher is truly insightful and reveals something extraordinary about you, you probably should not send it in. But ultimately the decision is yours!

I just turn in my application two days ago crosses fingers

@SamusScipio If I don’t get into Princeton early (which will most likely be the case), I’ll be applying to some liberal arts schools, 3-4 other Ivies, and the UC’s! What about you?

I agree with @Ambitious19 (who is on top of this thread by the way). Don’t want to overdue it with the recommendations
