Someone told me that princeton doesn't look at your Freshman grades at all. Is this true? Hypothetically then, if a student got a 1.4 gpa in Freshman year and 4.0gpa in the rest it would count as 4, am I right?

No, that is not true.

In the Michelle Hernandez book titled “A is for Admission,” she writes that Princeton only uses grades from 10th, 11th, and 12th grades in computing an applicant’s cumulative GPA.

Yeah, but they would still be able to see that you got multiple D’s or F’s during your freshman year. Also, your class rank will be abysmal.

(OP’s wording, he said “doesn’t look at” - so I had to disagree)

Can they see the classes you took freshman year, though? Because I took an advanced class that year and would like if they saw that.

I read somewhere that Princeton does not consider freshman grades.
But if you’re getting a 1.4 your freshman year, then I doubt you’ll be able to pull it up to a 4.0 for the rest of your high school career. Actually, I don’t even see how it’s possible to get a 1.4 if you’re considering Princeton. Do you refuse to do your homework and cut class every time you have a test or what?
Just because Princeton doesn’t technically count freshman grades doesn’t mean that you should slack off. That’s called playing the school game, and I’m pretty sure that admissions officers aren’t impressed when someone only works hard when they know they’re being watched.

What if some people took AP Biology or AP Human Geography as freshmen? Those people always come off as dumb to me because it doesn’t count for credit anyway. Is it just like a complete waste for them?

I will have like a 3.9 UW when applying, but I have a C that will count as an A in my GPA due to re-taking it. Will they re-calculate my GPA? Because then I’ll have like a 3.7…

“Those people always come off as dumb to me because it doesn’t count for credit anyway.”

a lot of schools do look at freshman grades, though. and it seems most schools would look at the courses you took freshman year. am i right? i hope so.

even if they don’t, taking an ap class freshman year would probably boost their weighted gpa a lot and help make them higher in rank than their peers.

Dumb to take APs as a freshman? Doesn’t count for credit? What?

My D was REQUIRED to take an AP class as a freshman (the school was just starting an IB program and this was required to keep them on track for whatever reason).

This:
Shows rigor.
Adds grade weight (if your school weights, and it’s necessary at competitive high schools where ALL “top” kids have nearly ALL weighted classes).
Therefore increases your rank.
And might get you out of a class in college.

Honors Biology was also weighted, and it was much easier to get an A in there than in AP. At my school, you take the test, but all of the freshman were informed that they weren’t getting credit even if they passed.

So it’s kind of a waste…
