Question as stated above. My freshman year grades were pretty decent and raised my GPA. I had mostly honors courses and one AP course. Will they really just disregard all of it? Although 10th and 11th grades were not bad either, that year helped keep my GPA up :(

I was led to believe that freshman grades aren’t considered at all, regardless if they are bad or good.

What was your GPA for your freshman, sophomore, and junior years?

I wasn’t aware that Princeton disregarded freshman grades. I was under the impression that only Stanford does that.

But if they do, I don’t think they’ll consider them if they’re good and not consider them if they’re bad. That kind of defeats the purpose I think. But if your transcripts are sent in and they have your freshman grades on them, I’m sure they’ll have to notice them.

nah, princeton does too.
but i think the whole point of disreguarding them is that they show little about who you are now. in that sense i dont think freshman grades are incredibly important no matter what school is reading the app. at most they just get factored into the proverbial “picture of you” that the readers create. not nearly like junior year grades which sort of go under the microscope.

not that i know for sure, of course. just what ive thought from observation.

If your school calculates and reports a class rank, then presumably your freshman year grades are included in the calculation of your class rank and from that perspective those grades are helping you. If Princeton is really only interested in 10th-12th grades, shouldn’t they get a class rank based on 10th-12th as well?

what are some other top schools that don’t consider freshman year grades, on top of Stanford and Princeton?

Actually your freshman grades are a big factor when applying to Ivy league schools because it shows that you have been dedicated your enturre high school career.

At the info session they said that freshman grades were disguarded

I think it’s really this: freshman grades are not totally disregarded, they just don’t care about it as much as sophomore, junior grades. Having good freshman grades is better than having low ones, even if Princeton doesn’t care that much.

Everything ‘official’ I’ve read/heard has said they actually recalculate a GPA without freshman year grades…

Princeton and Stanford don’t see freshman grades. Also, the UCs don’t regard these grades.

As far as I know, most top schools don’t give much consideration to freshman grades. So even if you had a bad year, as long as you made notable improvements, you are fine.

For those of you are saying it is important or does not count for much; you’re wrong. They have absolutely zero impact. They don’t even look at them. It doesn’t matter if they are good or bad, although if they were bad it would screw your class rank.

I think the main reason why they do this is that Freshman classes are easy and not “Real High School”. In some schools, 9th grade is part of Middle School.

^ If your class rank would be substantially higher without your freshman grades, do they even take that into consideration? Or do they really just not look at them at all for any purpose?

^
They recalculate your GPA without your Freshman grades. But they do not even look at Freshman year. They just look at Sophomore, Junior, and the first semester of Senior and calculate your GPA based on those grades.

^Right, they look at your grades from 5 semesters (which accounts for 10th, 11th, and 1st semester of 12th grade). And then if your accepted, they look at your 2nd semester grades for senior year (obviously to see if you slacked off significantly or not).
