Hi,

Thinking of moving to Princeton. How is princeton high? Is it very competiative? How abt extra curicular activities? Any comparable schols in the area?

Princeton has one of the highest concentrations of strong high school options that I know of, including the public high school, and George School across the river in PA.

In the Princeton area, within relatively simple driving distance:

Princeton Day School
The Hun School (has boarding)
Lawrenceville School (has boarding)
Peddie (has boarding)
George School ¶ (has boarding)
Solebury School ¶ (has boarding)
Notre Dame High School (Catholic Co-Ed in Lawrenceville/Trenton)
Villa Victoria Academy (all girls Catholic)
Stuart Country Day School of the Sacred Heart (all girls Catholic, Sacred Heart network)

Princeton is a great place to live in terms of quality of life (great restaurants, good shops, amazing public library, great performing arts, fairly diverse community). Also very easy access to NYC or Phila. Not so far from the Delaware River and the quaint towns on its banks. And of course, it’s home to the university.

Real estate (to own) can be shockingly expensive. And of course, all those great restaurants and shops aren’t free. There is massive wealth, and commensurate lifestyles (country clubs, shore homes, etc.) in some parts of the area.

Princeton is a great little town, Hodge Road or thereabouts is the place to live and of course, the public HS is tops. Big bucks to live in the Borough. Montgomery public HS is also very good.

Pennington is a nearby private BS that is pretty good, too.

Princeton High School is a fantastic school…if I were to go to public, I’d go to Princeton. I’m a current freshman at Peddie, and applied to both Stuart, George, and PDS, so if you have any questions, feel free to talk to me!

@Weatherby: Thanks for the addition of Pennington School…don’t know why that slipped my mind. Hodge and Cleveland (what’s up with those rotaries they put in?!?) indeed have some amazing houses, but there are plenty of other desireable areas around town…though not necessarily as walkable to Palmer Square.

I think the rotaries (circles) are to slow the traffic cutting over to the main road going towards Hopewell, the one PDS is on (Cherry Valley?).

A friend who lives in that area tells me that Borough residents can audit courses at the University. Nice for those young 30 year old Wall Street “retirees”.

The people that I knew in Princeton all sent their kids to either PDS, Pennington, Hun, Peddie or L-ville but I understand the public school is off the charts.

@Weatherby: I suspect you’re correct on the circles, and the speed bumps on Hodge serve the same function.

The road that PDS is located on is called The Great Road/Elm Road; and Stuart and PASH (Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, the up-to-8th grade all-boys brother school to Stuart) are also both located on or just off it.

The developments and areas near the many country clubs (Cherry Valley, Bedens Brook, Jasna Polana, etc.) in the Princeton area have some great homes, as does the Edgerstoune enclave where The Hun School is located.

Just curious- of the boarding and private day schools in and around Princeton, which schools are the most prestigious and the largest “feeders” into Princeton U?

Thank you all of information. @SevenDad and @weatherby Do you no any apartment complex which come in PHS zoning?

@alwaysaparent: As I am currently very much NOT in the market for real estate (rental or otherwise) in the Princeton area, I can’t say. Here is a link to the realtor I’d call if I were just getting started looking around. They do have some rentals listed, but they seem to be mostly homes or carriage homes on larger estates.

They might be able to turn you on to other good resources/communities.

@perrier268: I’d say the school that is considered the 800-lb gorilla of the Princeton area is Lawrenceville…it being the most “famous” beyond NJ. I think it does have a fairly high matriculation into Princeton, but I don’t know that I’d quite call it a “feeder” in the old-school sense of the guidance counselor simply needing to make a phone call. Perhaps one of the Lawrenceville students/parents could comment. I noted this in another thread, but this year, Stuart Country Day (an all-girls Sacred Heart School) had 15% of their Seniors gain acceptance to Princeton…this is higher than the norm IMO, and simply awesome for Stuart.

@SevenDad while searching through forum I found out your part by part post abt application process that was outstanding and very helpful. Thank you for all the info. I thought may be you are in princeton. Overall the area looks very interesting. It has location advantage (NY, philly) I need to find out more abt Hun, Peddie and Pennington I guess but overall PHP sounds like good school too. Thanks all for your response.

@alwaysaparent, If you are looking into those three schools, I would definitely add Princeton Day School (PDS) to the list. It has a great reputation.

I live about 30 minutes from Princeton, here are a few links to give you a very general idea of what rentals are available and their prices. Renting makes sense.

SevenDad,
Bedens Brook is probably the best golf club in the area, although the Ridge isn;t too bad for a Tom Fazio designed course. Springdale is enjoyable and it has a surprising number of members who are also members at Pine Valley.
