what furniture is there for single room , a bed, a desk and a chair? Is there a drawer chest?

Yes, you get a dresser/drawer chest, a bed, a desk, a chair. My D had a single as a freshman, I also got her a bedside table, a bedside lamp, a rug, and a mirror. She never put up the mirror, if I remember:). Yes she was my first, and yes I was indulgent.

is there a closet in the room?

Thanks!

from the floor plans you can see if there is a structural closet that is part of the room, if not there will be some sort of wardrobe type closet for hanging clothes

Thank you lastone! Looks like there is one with double doors… must be a wardrobe…

You’re welcome… If anyone else looks at the floorplan and doesn’t see a closet as part of the room and doesn’t see a wardrobe type thing either, don’t worry… the floorplans don’t always show the furnishings (like the wardrobe), sometimes they just show the room layout, especially for the older buildings.

And in some rooms there are bookshelves, but not all rooms. I think my daughter had them in two of her four rooms.

Will my son be able to leave his laptop and tv in his room while he is at OA? He has a single but there is a double next to him and they share a bathroom. The OA information letter states that general items can be stored in the room but valuable items like computers and stereos may be left in a secure storage area in Gauss Hall. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hello everyone,

I don’t mean to intrude or anything as a non-parent, but I thought it would be helpful if I shared what my parents and I are planning on doing to move in (I’m a rising Princeton freshman). I’m from Florida and therefore pretty far from NJ, so my parents definitely want to limit the amount of travel. I’ll be participating in OA and will be flying into Newark on the 4th alone. In my suitcase, I’ll bring just the essentials plus a bit more: what I’ll need for OA, toiletries, maybe some linen, and extra clothes–and I’ll leave them in the room (unpacked, since my roommate’s not going on OA/CA). My parents will meet me at Princeton on the 10th for orientation, when I arrive back from OA, with the remainder of my belongings, e.g. laptop, more clothes, etc. Whatever we’re missing, i.e. furniture and appliances, we plan on getting in the surrounding area. (By the way, does anyone think there will be enough time for last-minute shopping?) And anything extra from home that couldn’t be carried along in luggage will just be shipped–hopefully not much.

Looking forward to September; should be an awesome year! :)

We can’t remember what my son did about the laptop while he was on OA:). He thinks he put it in his closet. That said, if they offer secure storage, why not take it?

Regarding the closets:
They have narrow wardrobes, at least for the 2-bedroom quads. (Bedrooms too small to fit 2 wardrobes, so 2 roomies have to share one in each room.) It was tight; people stacked storage on dressers and under beds, but the common room was more spacious. Each bedroom was more the size of a bedroom for 1.

I could have sworn there was a sofa or upholstered chairs, but maybe somebody brought it/them? (My D was the 4th to arrive; one was doing OA, one a runner, another an Internat’l, so they were there ahead.) Other than that, there were no accessories like tables, etc. One person had already bought a throw rug. As mine was the last to show up and I alone had a car which I rented, I took the wheel-less members out to buy things like mirrors, once all had arrived and they had decided what else they needed.

Do most kids use loft beds or just risers?

You can raise the beds up to a pretty high level without risers just by changing where the metal piece that the mattress sits on is hooked into the sides. We got ours up to ~4 feet (top of mattress) that way, and could store plenty of things underneath (underbed storage, boxes, suitcases, our fridge).

Good to know thanks!

depends on the room-- i knew some people who used lofts. There are some rooms (esp the witherspoon quads), where two beds will not fit in the bedroom unless they are bunked. Also, not all beds can be raised. There is quite a variety of furniture around campus. If you get the newer beds, you can raise them pretty high without anything. If you get the metal ones, they don’t raise, so you would need to get risers to get them more than about a foot off of the ground.

You’ll return back from OA before your other roommates arrive (you’ll be back friday night, they’ll get there saturday) and even if you do have roommates there during the time you’re away (for example, athletes I think might be there), they’re your roommates and so you have no choice but to trust them around your stuff like your laptop. During the year, you’ll be leaving your laptop in your room a lot.
That said, I think I did put my laptop in one of my dresser drawers under some clothes last year.

See you fellow parents (those of you who will be there) on Saturday. Safe traveling to all!

Mrscollege: I’ll be there. We went on Saturday for OA movein, but I will be going back on the 11th to finish up some things and for the parents’ reception. My S is in Forbes what dorm is your S/D in?

Got back on Sunday from CA move in. Won’t be going back for orientation.

I was happy they had a parent’s reception in Rocky. I think this is probably the same event they will have for parents during orientation so I won’t miss much. They spoke about academic advising, academic resources available and also about all the fun things that went on at the residential college.

Everything was organized and smooth. S was happy to be off on his own.

I’ll be back on the 11th as well. My daughter moved into Whitman. She’s off backpacking with OA. We couldn’t fit all her stuff in the car. So we’re bringing a few more things along.
