@luckydoggy1234 Did you? I don’t think deferred students get financial aid emails during the RD round, but I may be wrong.
nope, but it seems as if a lot of rd ppl did
@dolph1n Columbia (LL), MIT, Johns Hopkins, washU, UVA. There’s hope after Princeton
@debate4ever Congrats on Columbia and MIT! Have you made up your mind yet on where you want to go?
Also, did anyone else on this thread send in additional information after their deferral?
Yeah I sent in a LOCI + resumé @azwu331
@debate4ever How are Columbia and MIT faring against each other for you? I’m torn up.
@azwu331 haven’t made my mind up yet, but I’m a generally indecisive person. I sent a loci with a few (very minor lol) updates
@Anonymoose3 same really conflicted. I really like MIT but am nervous about the academic pressure. Columbia’s great too.
@debate4ever @Anonymoose3 What is your intended major? MIT is better for STEM related subjects, but you’re right — that place is a giant pressure cooker when it comes to competitiveness. I don’t think Columbia is that much easier either; a world-class education will always come with world-class competition! Both schools are great though, and you’ll do awesome at both regardless of which one you choose.
@azwu331 - Biology
I want to be able to talk to people who can nerd out about anything from biology to political science (which I’m pretty interested in). That’s something Columbia has more than MIT.
I also don’t really want to go somewhere the grades are deflated or classes overly hard because I’m interested in spending time on extracurricular things (including things similar to MUN, debate, Mock Trial) and I may want to go to Law school (where GPA is paramount). Also, I want somewhere more collaborative than competitive if at all possible. I don’t think these are “elite school” things, but rather MIT things. For example, at Harvard (I have heard rumored) that the grades are inflated enough that there is more time to do things outside of classes than at peer schools. I don’t know where else this is true, though.
@Anonymoose3 I know that Harvard, Yale, and Brown are known for their grade inflation, while schools like Princeton, MIT, and UChicago are known for their grade deflation. Columbia is more in the middle in terms of these “elite schools”, but if you want to go somewhere where you could spend time on extracurriculars and do things outside of class, I personally think Columbia is a better choice for you. I’ve heard that MIT is extremely cutthroat and demanding; I know of one kid who didn’t even apply there because he didn’t want to destroy his social life. Both schools have great biology majors though, so you really won’t lose anything from your decision.
@Anonymoose3 Also, the Core Curriculum at Columbia makes it a better place to have nerdy discussions about random things. New York is a great place with many resources, so that’s definitely a plus.
woah, i forgot this thread existed!! it’s crazy to think that ivy day is coming up! for y’all, is princeton still your number 1 choice? i sent in a LOCI not too long after being deferred, but the more i think about it, the more i’ve convinced myself i don’t love it (as much). maybe i’m just being delusional though in an effort to save myself from another whirlpool of devastation that i experienced back in december lol.
“i sent in a LOCI not too long after being deferred, but the more i think about it, the more i’ve convinced myself i don’t love it (as much).”
Same thing has been happening to me. Ah, well not like I have a chance at getting in anyway. All shall be revealed in 11 days…
@eyesight2020 @Anonymoose3 Dang, just 11 more days left! Can’t believe that it’ll be all over soon.
Haha, that’s completely normal. I’d rather convince myself to not like a school and get in as a wonderful surprise than fall in love with the school and get bitterly rejected…
I sent my LOCI in late January with a few updates, so it might have been a bit long. How long were your LOCIs, and did you put in it that Princeton was your number 1 choice? Princeton is still my #1, but the only difference now is that I will no longer mind if I don’t get in. In the end, it’s not where you go to college that matters, but what you do there. Princeton would be awesome, but there are definitely opportunities elsewhere.
@Anonymoose3 If you got into Princeton on the 31st, would you choose it over Columbia or MIT?
@azqu331 - I’d probably have to visit them to decide! Doubt it will be an issue that even comes up though.
@azwu331 I have no idea. I applied as applied math major but now am doubting that decision. Might do some other interdisciplinary science instead. Princeton is still definitely my number 1.
@Anonymoose3 I have almost exactly the same concerns about MIT!
@Anonymoose3 with columbia, cornell, mit, and northwestern in your pocket, i definitely believe you have a great chance!! congratulations on all your options, and same to @debate4ever! y’all are killing it. (i’m totally envious!)
@azwu331 my LOCI was ~500 words, i think? i thought it was too long, but i just sent it in anyway, because i think half of me thought they wouldn’t even read it. i did mention that princeton remained my first choice in the email, but now, i’m unsure. i’ve heard a lot about princeton’s grade deflation (i know y’all were talking about this earlier), and as someone who has like a 70% desire to go to med school, having a good GPA is crucial, u feel? also, pton does have a reputation of being very white and preppy, and i desperately seek diversity. ahhh idk. i say this now, but if i were to get in, i’d probably go nuts with happiness. i’m definitely not in a position to be picky about such esteemed colleges.
@eyesight2020 Grade deflation at Princeton has officially been rescinded. Princeton’s reputation of being “white and preppy” is long outdated and diversity is one of the hallmarks of Princeton today. I would encourage you to visit before drawing too many conclusions
So did any of you guys get any suspicious financial aid emails from Princeton…?
I got an email. I was deferred by Princeton through Questbridge, so I sent them my 2014 tax forms when I applied in November, but a couple of days ago they asked me to send the 2015 forms or 2014 forms if I didn’t have 2015 forms. I was kinda confused because I thought they already had my 2014 tax forms.
Also! I noticed that the email that they contacted me from is different from the financial aid email that they have posted on their website.
How was it different?
