Princeton vs. Harvard Premed

Hey guys...could we compare Harvard and Princeton in terms of premed? Things such as med school admissions stats would be nice.

find the stats yourself and stop being so lazy.

It really doesn't matter as they're probably identical.

Get into both and we'll find it for you. And send you a gift basket.

If you have to ask, are you HP material?

i've looked around for stuff that would help you out but it just made me really tired. The thing is if you go to either school and do fairly well i think chances are that you will get into medical school. SO, I guess that just depends if you are looking for something more specific, like if one school has more premed opportunites than the other or something. Anyway, the best I can really say is I think either/or would be great. :)

Haha, I was looking at the first reply to the OP's post and thought "wow, I'm kind of mean... I should learn to stop doing that. This sounds like something I'd think, but I can't believe I actually said it." Then I counted the number of 1's in the replier's name and chuckled, 'cause I surprised myself on several different levels.

haha i would never have thought of that. weird

An attempt at a useful reply.

Premed admissions statistics are not terribly helpful because they report success rates only for those who make it far enough to apply. Thus, they ignore those who got a few bad grades and gave up. They also do not address whether the school obstructs applications from students with lower grades and MCATs. As far as I know neither Harvard nor Princeton do this, but Hopkins apparently does.

Princeton puts its stats on the web. Google for site colon princeton.edu and something like medical school admissions. (sorry CC won't let me used the google syntax) They show terrific results for those who apply. Median GPA for accepted students is ~3.4, and the vast majority of applicants get in.

I have not see Harvard results on the web, but you can ask the admissions office. They also have the stats in the premedical advising system, and you might be able to arrange to see them when you visit. Rumor has it that Harvard's results are also terrific, similar to Princeton, as you would expect.

Two cautions, both schools have been making noises about raising academic standards. Harvard has reduced the number who get honors, and Princeton is trying to cut GPA's. So it may be harder to pull a 3.4 in the future. Unclear what this will do to medical school acceptances, but med schools tend to look at GPA's with little allowance for varying standards at colleges. Princeton grads also have high MCAT's as you would expect since they needed high SAT, SAT 2, Ap, etc to get into Princeton in the first place. So the "low" GPA's of admitted students is counter balanced by high MCATs.

Either place is terrific for premed. If there is a difference, it is far too small to make this a basis for your choice. The medical profession is filled with H and P grads.

The answer would probably be the same for the other super elites, except maybe MIT. Amherst has Princeton-like admission stats and publishes them on the web.
