@Vin520 How did you know that they keep evreything in file? I saw on a few websites that said interactions with admission office is not kept.
If anyone get off wait list, please post here! Thanks!
@boomboom123 They told me they added my emails to my files.
Did they say that when you called them or when you emailed them? @Vin520
Do we know that they are using the waitlist this year?
@boomboom123 They responded telling me that they had added my emailed supplement to my file a little while after I sent it. Not sure if that applies to all communication or not, though. I also haven’t heard anything yet.
@ahawkins Was there important information in the supplement like updates and stuff? Or was it just inquiry? They would definitely add updates to files, but probably not questions and inquiries for the office.
I am going to assume that Yale offering acceptance to waitlisted students this year is a bad sign for us. Oh well :l
@boxofdonuts I wouldn’t say that! Just the opposite, if Yale and Harvard are both going to their wait lists this year, it’s quite possible that Princeton will too. Hold on there buddy!
http://dailyprincetonian.com/news/2015/05/at-69-4-percent-class-of-2019-yield-highest-ever/
“Of the 1,909 admitted students, 1,324 have committed to the University.”
“The University expects that over the course of the summer, the yield number will be reduced by 20-30 students because of “summer melt,” Pullan said. The target enrollment number for the Class of 2019 remains 1,310.”
If what they expected actually happens, anywhere from 6 to 16 can be pulled from the wait list. I’m also guessing that they included kids who are doing Bridge Year as they included them last year to boost yield rate, and that’s around 30-40. It’s still possible guys!
Damn so we will probably be waiting into June for the most part… oh well at least the yield didn’t jump too much higher. Thanks for posting that @Homeless2Princeton
Edit: 41 were accepted off the waitlist last year when 1939 were admitted and 1341 chose to enroll with a target of 1308. This year we have 1909 admits with 1324 committed and a target of 1310… Hm.
@Homeless2Princeton @boxofdonuts I don’t know about you guys but to me that seems like a fairly decent sign, unless they decide to stick closer to their target number this year for whatever reason. They’ve definitely accepted more than their target number over the years, because even with a technically “overenrolled” class they will have tons of student gaps and people they just really want. Good luck!
@ahawkins They actually do stick very closely to their target number if at all possible. My son’s class (2016) overenrolled by upwards of 50 students and it was a logistical nightmare for them. This was the first year they went back to EA and they didn’t project the number of students who would ultimately accept their offer of admission. http://dailyprincetonian.com/news/2012/05/updated-u-overshoots-class-of-2016-by-more-than-50-students/
The main issue is housing. My son ended up in a former single that was converted to a double in his first year and it was VERY small. In the subsequent two years the university needed to reduce the number of students they enrolled to get the number back to a manageable level. It’s quite possible that they will take a few students from the wait list but summer melt is unpredictable.
@Cantiger From a logical standpoint I can see how over-enrolling would be a logistical nightmare for sure, but purely based on the trends of the past few years they have accepted 30-40 students off the waitlist, even when already enrolled over their stated target value by 30+. The number of kids not accepting that waitlist acceptance + the number of kids leaving by way of summer melt + Bridge Year kids probably makes sure the class doesn’t end up overenrolled by 60-70 as the previous numbers would suggest. But, of course, you’re right in that they don’t have to follow the past two years and could just decide to close the waitlist without accepting anyone, even if they were under-enrolled which they definitely aren’t.
@ahawkins Yes you are correct - they have gone to the wait list for most years but for the class of 2016 they did not. By target number I mean the number of students who actually matriculate, not the enrollment numbers which are subject to change based on summer melt. They will not hesitate to over enroll but they will do everything possible not to over matriculate, again based on housing limitations. But I am certain they will not go lower than their target of 1310 students, even if it takes them well into the summer months.
@Homeless2Princeton Hi, do you know by any if the Princeton Wait list is need blind? Some colleges are need blind through the admission process, but become need aware for the wait list. My family is low income so if it’s need aware, I’ll be at a disadvantage against those who do not require financial aid.
It’s reassuring that Princeton doesn’t offer a courtesy wait list so we know that they consider everyone Princeton material. I’m actually surprised I made the wait list. I don’t have an incredibly strong academic background and come from an unknown school. My parents actually grew up in poverty and neither of them completed elementary school and then immigrated to the U.S. I suppose it was because I had to work 45 hours a week at my family’s restaurant while balancing high school with a 4.0 GPA. My SAT score wasn’t great either (1980).
@Vin520 To my knowledge Princeton has not published anything that would indicate that the wait list is handled differently in terms of being need blind from the overall admission process. To add a bit of perspective, currently Princeton’s endowment is hovering around 21B so they are truly not concerned about your ability to pay for your education if you are not able to do so. In fact, being from a low income situation could potentially be a positive as they do actively publish how much financial aid they give each year as well as the number of students who receive it.
Thank you all for the information. My daughter received tthe Trustee Scholarship at BU turning down UPenn and Brown but she is waitlisted at Princeton which like many of you is her dream school. Does anyone know when they start calling students off the waitlist? She is scheduled for orientation the first week of June at BU
@miamimom3 Good luck to your daughter! Last year, the first CC reported acceptance was on the 21st (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/17298591/#Comment_17298591), but it has been much earlier in previous years.
“Thank you for your email and your continued interest in Princeton. At this point, we do not know if or how many students we will take off of the waitlist. Historically, we have taken between 0 and 150 students. We will notify you of any change in status as necessary and all waitlist activity will conclude no later than June 30.”
-Well this is what I got back from the admissions office so I guess since the class is 1324 right now, it won’t be until June before it shrinks a little for Princeton to use the waitlist. As H2P said, thr acceptance could range from 6-16 which is like a 1% chance. Good Luck everyone!
