I’ll be attending BC in the fall and I was curious if having a personal printer in my room was necessary?

The booklet that was mailed out about the BC laptop program “strongly recommends” a printer in your room.

I wouldn’t bother unless you have to print out a lot of color powerpoints (which most never bother). I never have a printer throughout my four years and I did fine using the BC printers. My roommate has a printer, but he uses it only once in a long while for some cut-out. For big, colorful printing projects, I rely on the BC printing center in the basement of Carney. They print everything for cheap. (50% cheaper than Kinko!)

Reddune, how’s that work if you are doing a paper at 2AM? Are there printers right in the dorm for you to send your output to? Or do you need to suit up and put your boots on and slog through the slush in February to some printing depot?

Not necessary but perhaps convenient, especially if you are the type of person that needs to see hard copy. BC will print 500 pages free, but you need to go to the library center to pick them up, so an inexpensive <$50 printer may be worth the convenience.

Many students don’t bother with printers. I suspect ones that have a printer either got it free as part of the computer purchase or there was a spare laying around the house.

No, it’s not at all necessary, but a personal printer does come in handy if you are one of the students that can’t seem to plan ahead (i.e., the one needing to print out a paper at 2AM, lol).

Good to know…thanks. I picked up one of the laserjets ($85) on the Dell site.

Yeah, I’m a 2AM guy.

Well, I guess it’s a good thing classes don’t start until 8am. You can always go over to the library before class to print out a paper :)
