Printers

So I got one of those new does everything you could ever want printers for Christmas (I don't think my mom new I hooked our printer up with our router so I could print wirelessly). I was just wondering how accessible printers are at most colleges. I know if I'm going to be printing a lot of pages it would be ok to walk to a computer lab, but if I'm talking like 1-5 pages I need quickly, do most dorm buildings have a communal printer? Are most dorm rooms small enough to where a printer would seem to take up too much valuable space?

It's not that I'm worried about being able to print as much as I'm wondering if I should take it back and get a mp3 player!

Most dorms have printers in the labs and the labs are open 24/7..so there should a printer/PC at SOMETIME during the day...but if your going to be working on your own computer that you bring, it would probably be smart to take your own printer....I know I am. To answer your question, no, there is no one "communal" printer...people either use the lab or their own.

BTW, if you do take your own printer with you...do not let it be shared on the network...make sure it is not accessible by anyone else besides you.....you don't want to end up with 100 pages of porn printed in your printer overnight and be out paper/ink. Its happened before.

If anyone has specific information from experience, I'm applying to MIT, Davidson, Georgia Tech, USC, and Furman.

I brought my own printer and am glad I did..but I go to Pitt and we get like 900 free prints per semester...of course, these are in black ink only...colored prints cost $. but if I did not bring my own printer, I would still be able to print off 900 pages per semester without a problem.

at WM, we're allowed 50 pages printed/copied free, and then they start charging. I have my own printer (a copy/scan/printer 3 in 1, skipped on the fax ones), but many people do not. They do have 24 hr computer labs around campus to print, but I like the convience of having it in my room. I just put it on top of my desk on the little bookshelf place, so it' doesn't really take up room...

Soccerguy, so I guess it is better to get a 3-in-1... Because I was debating whether a copier/scanner would be of any use since they do tend to get larger...

oh...mine is a 3 in 1 too....very useful. I reccomend Epson. :-)

If you go to school in the northeast when winters will be cold, and lots of snow, nothing will beat having your own printer vs. walking out to the communal printers. My daughter is a night owl and ends up printing a lot of her stuff after regular hours at the library.

I'll be brining my own printer next year....only problem is that my printer is a large HP l:aserJet, so it'll take up a good amount of room.

I attend Davidson. I didn't bring a printer with me to college at first, but quickly had to go to office max and purchase one. I live in Texas and dragging a printer up in my car was too much of a pain, but I soon realized a needed one-just for the convenience of having it nearby. The dorm rooms at Davidson are large enough to accomodate them and the dorms are all online. I store the printer and a lot of other stuff in a storage unit that I and several other students rent over the summer-so no need for dragiing back and forth from home. Has worked out well.

HP makes an all-in-one printer - everything but fax - don't need that in dorm anyways - about $99 bucks - works like a charm - takes up very little space - b/w and color - very easy to use - just a bit larger than a very big shoe box - HP great about replacing if any problem - sharable with roomy very easily

HP 1200 series!!! - can't beat it!!
