Does UVa allow their students to bring printers in their dorms? If so, is it possible to use wireless printers?

I ask because I went to UVa a few weeks ago and none of the four guys I was with (I stayed in Lambeth) had printers! I also tried connecting to the wireless network with my iPod Touch but it wouldn't budge!

I want to buy a printer for school because I don't want to keep track of quarters and I don't want to make several trips to the library just to print something! I've also found a good printer/scanner/fax machine for a really good deal!

Thanks a lot!!!

You can definitely bring your own printer. I’ve seen wireless printers being used in dorms. I don’t know how it works now as I have moved off grounds but in my first year there was an open wireless network called wahoo through which you could get internet on your portable devices.

I think only students and those affiliated with the university are allowed access to the wi-fi on campus, that might have been the reason.

I’ve heard that most assignments are submitted electronically. Is that true?

In any case, I’d have my own printer just for miscellaneous use.

S1 and S2 used their own printers which were wireless for their laptops. You just need to set up your laptop for your particular printer, as well as you need to be in a certain range of it. I think this is what you may be asking. Initially you have to set it up using a USB so make sure you bring one with you. Also, buy extra ink cartridges because the ones that are installed at the manufacturer do not contain a lot. You will need black and color ink replacements. Chose a printer that suits your needs, many go on sale as you get into July/August.

I never had a printer until this year. My friend had a printer, and she spent just as much on ink as I did paying per page to print. Originally, my dorm had a computer lab with a printer, though, so I didn’t have to go very far to print. However, to save money, all of these computer labs have been removed so my 4th year I did a lot of running to the libraries. Living off grounds, a printer was essential. You can also print at the libraries now by wirelessly connecting to the UVA printers with your laptop (if in range). I think if you have space in your room for a printer and really want one so that you don’t have to deal with the hassle of library printing, you can bring one, but if you don’t want the hassle of dealing with ink catridges then it isn’t more expensive, if at all, to print per page at the library printers.

Laser printer are getting cheaper. Get them instead of the inkjet. It will be cheaper in the long run.

Wow thanks so much you guys!

I’m glad the price to print out my own pages will be competitive with the prices charged by the libraries!

I’m definitely going to buy a printer now (mainly because I’ll need one when I decide to move off Grounds).

Thanks again!

Printing on your own is often more time-efficient as well. I remember it would take awhile for the printers in Clemons to 1) receive my print request 2) wait for me to pay and then 3) wait for my job to hit the top of the queue. I’d sometimes wait 10 minutes for my print job during busy times. Granted it has been a few years, so things may have been upgraded, but printing on your own is almost always more time-saving.

That is why I always print in Clark at the quick stations.

You can also print for free at the OAAA (Office of African American Affairs) “house”. I call it a house because it looks just like one.

Oh, and OAAA is NOT just for black people. That’s a common misconception. Hahaha.
