Greetings, does anyone know how UCSC establishes the priority for registration? Is there a priority? Is it random or do students with more units get ahead in the line? Thanks for any info!

You are given a registration date based on your standing. For frosh through junior standing, you also have two passes of registration to deal with (so two registration dates). During pass one, you can only register in a max of 14 units. You can register an additional five units (for a total of 19 units) during second pass. The exception for senior status is one has only a single pass and can register the full 19 units during that pass.

Any units over 19 units (up to 22) must be registered after the quarter has begun. More than 22 units requires permission from your college adviser. There are some other stipulations in place for registering more than 19 units (often not available first quarter to frosh or new transfers without permission; there is also a minimum GPA requirement).

So yes, registration is based, in general, on seniority. I am discounting any early registration opportunities as I am not intimately familiar with them and cannot comment with any degree of certainty. I know at previous colleges, early registration went to groups of students who needed to register early for various reasons (such as student senate members who required a specific schedule so they could complete their senate obligations during the year as well). It is not something often discussed openly as it is not something that affects the general student body.

I probably gave you more information than you wanted, but it’s all good to know :)

Thanks Kender. I appreciate your helpful info.

Do you know if freshmen students get priority if they already have AP units on the books? Or are all freshmen created equal (beyond the student govt folks, etc.)? I am curious how it is determined the order for registration.

Among a class, those who have more credits through APs and college credit register earlier. I had enough credits that I’m a freshman with sopohmore credits and my first pass started at the same time as the sophomores, way earlier than for freshman without such credits.
