If I stay on the waitlist and get accepted off of it next week, I know that I will have to immediately pay the deposit. But if I ultimately decide that I don't want to attend CMU, is the deposit the only thing that I lose?

Yes, it depends on your honesty.

Is paying the deposit legally binding, if lets say something goes wrong and you can no longer attend CMU if you’re accepted off the PWL?

Nope. The FAQ they gave us said we’ll have until the next day to pay the deposit. If you don’t, they rescind their acceptance immediately. There is no obligation to pay. CMU just makes it seem that way.

Alright. So if I’m a bit shakey about going CMU because I first want to hear back from another school’s WL, would it be better for me to move to the RWL, which would give me a bit more time to decide?

Well, if you have 800 to blow then go ahead and pay the deposit; that way you’ll at least have CMU to go to. Once/if a school you like more accepts you, then just back out.
