Private Highschool?

well, first of all, i’m in 8th grade…yeah, not in high yt, but dats why i’m here :D

i want to go to this private highschool in MA (i’m in CA; gotta love that beach), and well, it’s not easy to get in.

95th percentile in ssat

atheletics/extra curriculum activity (which i don’t have)

a good record of community service (nope)

recommendation from math& english teacher & myself (i homeschool, so yeah)

an interview (yikes!)

and most of all:

33,000 dollars a year of tuition + flight tickets.

AND i have to do all dis by february…what do i do??

PLEASE don’t say ‘u r screwed’ T.T

In regards to the tuition, many private schools offer either need-based aid, or merit based scholarships (or even both) to students.

For the recommendations, take a look at the school's website and/or contact the admissions office directly to see who you should get the recommendations from (I'm guessing you'd get them from your ECs)

It's interesting how they expect "A good record of community service." First of all, I don't know many people that volunteer prior to high school, and those that do usually volunteer with their church. Also, many organizations request that volunteers be at least 14 years old (some will allow younger kids, but then a parent must accompany them, and for many people, their parents are busy with work)

It's not too late! You will have to get the time line info from the school to be sure. As for $$$$$$$, have you inquired about grant $$$$$$$$? Also you might want to check out the prep school thread and ask the same question. I bet you'll get alot of responses. What is the name of the school? Good Luck

We're looking at some of the same possibilities--maybe the same school you are looking at. We are in Minnesota, also homeschooling.

It's hard to say how the school will evaluate our eligibility for financial aid, but families with quite high incomes can get financial aid--after all, list price is VERY expensive. It's also hard to say how competitive my child will be for admission, which is your concern too, but all you can do is apply and see what happens. We are shopping around for local private high schools (definitely not as good as the out of state ones, in some cases) and also scaring up ideas for joint classes with other homeschoolers.

You're not too late to apply, so don't give up. Maybe my son and you will be classmates next year--it could happen.

Token, Are these boarding schools that are out of state? If not, do you plan to move, or do you have family that your child will live with?

If my child goes out of state he will be in boarding school. We are looking at several in-state schools (to which he could commute as a day student), at early college entrance in a couple of different in-state colleges, at doing more ad-hoc joint homeschooling classes, and at moving to ONE state where we could possibly find a suitable school. But we are unlikely to move, because I have to care for an aged parent. We are looking for the best "fit" among the possibilities that are financially feasible.

thanks!!! but about the financial aid, i can't get it. although there are lots of 'incomes' (a.k.a. we pay lots of tax), we never really gained anything for like a year, paying for my parents' work's employees, bills, etc... i'm not an illegal resident, (i have E2 visa; that IS legal), but i can't get a financial aid because our tax reports look like we are some rich ppl.

i'm thinking (hoping) andover or exeter. do they give any scholarships despite of financial aid qualifications?

no, if u apply 4 financial aid ur parents will hav 2 state their income. even then, lots of ppl whose income is over 100,000 is still eligible 4 financial aid
