Hey guys,
I'm goin' to 'Nova next year and I was just wondering if anybody had any insight as to the real benefit of going to a private school over a state school. My parents are paying full tuition (get no financial aid) and I am feeling very guilty because I feel I can be going to a state school for a lesser price and almost the same education.....

Do private schools have any real benefits over state schools?? Let's take Westchester for example.....I know 'Nova is a much better school than West Chester, but can anybody point out specific reasons why? THANKS

In addition, I'm goin' to try to go to Med School....So would med school applicants be better off at a private school than a state school?? Thanks

In terms of reputation/career advancement, I do not believe there is a meaningful difference between a respected state school and a well regarded private school like Villanova. I would caveat this statement, however, by saying that it is important to perform well in a state program.

More and more top students are considering state schools as a viable option. They have excellent, well regarded programs (and in most cases, a wider variety of academic options). Companies and grad schools know that the top students at state schools are every bit as talented and qualified as those as competitive private schools. At the end of the day, your career success will be determined by your talent, drive and values – not where you went to college.

If you are talented enough to be accepted at an excellent program like Villanova – you will do well wherever you go.

I think it would be a fair to compare Villanova to a top state school otherwise your comparing apples and oranges. Nothing against West Chester but the schools do not compare.

If you know you want to go to a penn med school then the West Chester feeder program is fine, but if you want to compete beyond that then the same grades at Villanova will open many more doors.

ya i thought so too. I always thought Villanova was much higher regarded than West Chester. Thanks so much for the input.

I understand that people will do pretty well at whatever school they go too as long as they have a drive for success and are high in their class, however…

when applying to med school, a 3.8 gpa at Villanova would surely give you a spot at a med school over a 3.8 at a school like West Chester correct? How about a 3.8 at West Chester against like a 3.5 at 'Nova???
