Hey, guys, I will transfer to CAL in letter and science college this Fall ( I plan to take Statistics as my major and take accounting or econ as minor). I am just worried about the housing because I am a very private person. I extermely want to have a single seperated room where I can close my door and study by myself if my roommates are playing; I also want a seperate bathroom in case either me or my roommate is somehow mess-up and can't be "clean" enough. So I check the on-campus housing, it seems the single room is nice, but the bathroom is commonly shared. When I check the Yoritada Wada Residence Hall Apartments, the 2-person-sharing room seem to have seperate bathroom for me and my roommate, but seems a little small.

So, can anyone who is living either on-campus or off-campus talk about how to choose a good room ( the single room with a bathroom is the best, even it is very small, I just want to be private....; the 2-person-sharing room is also ok, if we can have our own bathroom; the triple is............) for a private person like me? I just want to have a quite environment to study and not a far distance to walk to UCB because I don't think I will buy a car due to the very expensive insurance fees ( I am 21 now).

Also, as a game-loving yonng man, I love to play my PC and XBOX360 games, and love to download music, movies, and games online; I heard that the on-campus housing provide you internet but if you download, the cops will fine you..... so is it true? So should I live off-campus and contact a internet provider by myself?

Rooms
If you want privacy I would stay away from the dorms. Walls are very thin so you can hear people talking when they hang out in the hallways. As far as bathrooms in the dorm, you get a locker for your stuff. For Wada, the bathroom, living room, and kitchen are shared areas. As far as I know it is near impossible to get a single and requires special circumstances.

Internet
Each student is given 12g each week. If you go over they cut off your internet connection for a week. Also, you can only legally download stuff. If you use limewire or any other illegal downloading you will be caught. I used limewire ONCE and my internet was cut off and I received an email. Another one of my friends actually had to settle in court and agree to pay a fine.

tx1988, i am in the same boat as you. I think it is better to live off campus for the kind of people like you and me. I just cannot study if there’s someone else in the room, so I think I have to have a room myself that I can study well. Otherwise, I would be doing nth, and just sitting here talking to my roomate or surfing the internet, NOT doing the hwk at all.

If you use torrents and they find out they will ban you for a week at the very least and turn you in at most. There is also a 12 gb download limit per week that resets at midnight on Sunday/Monday night.

It really sounds like you should be looking off campus with private internet. And don’t forget, there is a huge library system on campus with all kinds of places to study in peace (with AirBears wireless, perhaps the best router in the world).

If you can deal with not downloading, the internet here is amazing. I’m at Clark Kerr and I have 100mb/s down and 30mb/s up. The 12gb limit is easier to hit than one would think though.

If you can’t live without your torrents, live off campus with private internet.

Thx for your replies, it seems like I have to live off campus in order to live a normal life, so what about the expenses for off-campus? Is it cheaper or more expansive? And when should I start to rent the house?

The 12gb limit includes both uploading and downloading. So if you download 8 gigs and upload 4, for example, you will be shut off until Sunday/Monday night at midnight and I think you also have to take a quiz about bandwidth usage.
