Process of getting started applying for DC internships for summer 2017? (Will be graduating from UC

I’m interested in paid internships in DC for next summer and I am looking for advice on how to start the process. I am aware about a program called UCDC but I am not sure if that program is still able to apply to me because I will have graduated by then. If anyone can provide me any kind of insight to maybe your own personal experience or advice, first steps, etc would be appreciated. I am a Sociology (w an emphasis in culture and communications) who is going into the field of marketing if that helps.
Please and thanks in advance

Might I ask why you are looking for internships after you plan to graduate? Wouldn’t it make more sense to look for a full-time job?

It would be but I don’t think I have enough experience to take on a full time job in my field yet just because I switched majors in my junior year. I’ve only had one internship so far and jobs that had no relation to my major. Plus I thought having an opportunity at a fresh place for a short time might be nice before I really worked full time. So right now, I’m just exploring many different options

I graduated after declaring my major junior year, with no internships or relevant experience, and got a full time job, and this was five years ago during a market that was hitting recent grads particularly hard. What your response indicated is that you want a full-time job but are convinced that you can’t get one. That is a huge, huge, HUGE mistake. The only people who should tell you that you don’t have enough experience or are unprepared for a role are the hiring managers at the companies to which you apply.

Looking to move to a new city with only a temporary job is not wise, no matter how you slice it. Look to get a full time job doing something. If it turns out you don’t like it after three months, you can seek a different job without being unemployed and worrying about how to pay your rent.

If you said that you were planning to enroll in graduate or professional school after the summer, then an internship could make sense. But if that isn’t in the plans for the fall after you graduate, internship searches are probably a waste of your time.

Well, that’s half true, I do feel like I’m at a disadvantage without having enough experience to get one. However, I’m simply looking for experiences that will allow me a chance to explore new areas for a short time. It is not that I want to actually move to a new city with a temporary job, but if I were to have an opportunity where maybe housing can be covered for the duration of the internship even if it is only for a summer, then i would not pass it up. Those are the kind of opportunities that I am looking for, not to actually move to the city itself permanently – a temporary stay with a temporary job, not a temporary job with a permanent stay if that makes more sense.

And I have been thinking about applying to grad school, however, I would like to gather up work/internship experience first because for those, then I definitely need a set of stronger experiences.

Visit your career center. They should be able to help with some leads. Internships should be partially done now near your university.
