Procrastination...Your Worst Enemy?

So I posted a thread not long ago and a bunch of people said that their biggest struggle in school is procrastination. Now Im curious...what is the cause of your procrastination?!

A lot of it’s laziness…I just don’t feel like doing real work, so I end up spending hours on stumbleupon, college confidential, facebook, etc…

I just kinda have issues getting started with the work. Once I’ve started, I keep going until I’m done.

There’s just so many things I feel like are more entertaining than homework: Facebook, callouts, hanging out with my neighbors, etc. And of course laziness.

Because I’d rather blow torch my nipples off than study for some of my classes. So instead of getting out the butane I visit CC.

Pretty much sums it up for me. I think about doing the work and generally set a time I will start it, but that time will keep getting pushed back. The best solution is to have the will power to say “I’m doing this right now.”

Because hard work may pay off eventually, but procrastination always pays off now.

“I can finish it later”

{Later}

"I can finish it in the morning before class starts}

{In the morning}

“I’ll just finish in class before he collects it.”

{In class}

“I’M NEVER PROCRASTINATING AGAIN!!!”

LMAO. ^ This. Repeat 209328 times.

It’s always, Oh mann, I’m gonna do so well in all my classes, I’m gonna beast it, I’m gonna get straight A’s man, no matter what. . I’m focused, I don’t care . . . day before major project is due: S&^#T!

Back to the question, for me, it’s getting focused and actually being able to accomplish something well before it’s due.

I’m always like, I have two weeks to do that paper, that’s maddd time. Then, one week, then 4 days until the night before. I always feel like I have enough time and even though I always bang it out, it’s wayy more stressful than if I were to just do it as soon as I could.

And whenever (rarely) I do finish my work way ahead of the due date, I feel so accomplished and proud of myself, no one can tell me nothing! Haha

Hahaha, lakerace summed it up perfectly.

haha…thats really funny lakerace. And so true!

Ughhh I think I’m just burned out now as much as I hate to say it. Little me tried very hard freshman year, sophomore year…Now it’s just…meh

I kind of get paralyzed sometimes. I want to be as near perfect as possible in everything, and that puts a lot of stress on me. When I have a test to study for (like my French final on Wednesday) or a paper to write, I think about how well I need to do and how good it’d make me feel, and I end up delaying the studying/writing process because it’s just so scary. I KNOW I need to do well and that doing well entails buckling down and doing the work, but it’s just so intimidating sometimes.

With this mantra I unfortunately under-prepared for my linguistics final today (though it was also harder and different than he said it’d be) and may get a less-than-pleasant grade overall. (higher than a 3.0 but less than a 3.6, which is an A here)

Over break I’m gonna try and find the will power to get over this. It can be crippling.

Why we procrastinate? Hell, I would rather actually go to work and make money then do some math problems and a paper on human desire or whatever. There are literally hundreds of things I rather do than actually doing some schoolwork (unless it’s a fun project or paper).

Just like most human college students, I procrastinate every now and then, especially around Finals. It’s taught me a lot, though.

I look at it as more prioritization than laziness. There are so many “important” things I can do before I get into that “boring” assignment. I do get my assignments done, though, and while I finish them a little later than I might like, they are completed.

While I certainly don’t recommend putting everything off, procrastination helps show you how good you are at getting things done under pressing circumstances (even if you voluntarily bring them upon yourself). It has helped me learn how to study at a quicker and more effective pace, and how to write better quality papers in less time.

If you’re looking to get out of the habit, make some kind of incentive to work toward and make sure it’s just inaccessible enough that you can’t satisfy the craving prematurely (count out anything on the Internet). The best ones are those that get you out of the study area for an extended period of time, such as traveling out of town with friends. Of course, this doesn’t always fit in the middle of Finals Week, so be creative.

Good luck, and remember there’s always someone else having a harder time managing their time than you.

For studying, I think I’ve got the material fine. For papers, I just can’t stand writing them. It’s so tedious.

I had a paper due at 4 pm yesterday (but really 3:30 because I had to meet with a presentation group early) that I didn’t start until ~2:50 that day. I just copied and pasted paragraphs in from previous papers (to be fair, it was supposed to be comprehensive and nothing more), added a couple of original paragraphs, and wrote transitions.

Same as emberjed with papers. Even though my time management skills have actually improved a lot this semester, I am still struggling to hammer out papers sometimes hours before. It’s just such a frustrating process, especially when I can’t come up with a great idea. If I can come up with a good organized argument off the bat, I’m usually good with just sitting down and pushing through it. But when I don’t have anything to say, it’s really hard to motivate myself to keep going, even if I’m already 2-3 pages in. I just stall for hours hoping to get “inspired” and have the paper spontaneously write itself.

I’ve always been one to procrastinate so i guess its outa habit. Plus I get my work done better when I’m pushed for time, the pressure gives me more motivation.

Another problem I have is Not reading ahead esp if its a subject I’m struggling in! I’m too lazy to teach myself I guess

Web browsing and anxiety/depression really cause me to procrastinate the most. Sometimes I’ll be curious about a topic I’m studying and then before I know it, I’ve spent three hours on Wikipedia reading about rare lung pathologies, haha. As for the second reason, I occasionally have days when I feel so anxious or terrible that I can’t focus and end up taking naps or watching TV shows to make me feel better when I probably should be productive.
