Productive Ways to Spend Time Over the Summer

I know this isn’t strictly related to college, or even high school for that matter, but the users of this forum seem to be pretty productive people. I got out of 9th grade a few months ago and ever since, have been incredibly bored!

Every summer I get lost as to how I spend my time. By just sitting around all day and not accomplishing anything, I feel unfulfilled, but I’m too lazy to want to spend my time in strictly academic ways. I was wondering how the readers of this post spend their free time. Is there some sort of hobby I should try picking up- something that mixes both my creative and academic stimuli?

This summer in particular, I’m taking a math class and doing volunteering at a local library, but I’m still incredibly bored in my free time outside of these activities. I also have a commentary YouTube channel with around 1,000 subscribers, but those videos take a tremendous amount of work to produce and end up draining my energy.

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

I think you have some fun things going on already. I usually took classes during my HS summers. If you wanna be creative maybe something related to art if you enjoy that, but doing videos could also be great for you too. What hobbies have you always enjoyed? Maybe some things you had more time to do before high school?

Have fun enjoy your summers!

Thanks @JadeRock

I guess the problem for me is that I’m a pretty uninteresting person. When I was younger, I used to play video games during the summer, but I find that to be too boring and unfulfilling now. Ever since 8th grade, I’ve honestly just been prepping for college and haven’t really found many passions, besides just watching YouTube and TV shows.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion about finding some sort of art. I might try to get more into graphic design.

That sounds cool. It’s really interesting the different kinds of things people make at times. I always enjoyed playing videogames, after a while they got boring, but ended up being fun again.

And ever since 8th grade? I didn’t really start until 10th. Freshman year was pretty chill for me, I mean I cared about my grades, but not as much as later years. Anyway, good luck throughout high school, I’m sure you’re off to a great start!

@JadeRock

Yeah, I guess saying I started in 8th was a bit dramatic. Thanks!

  1. go to camp and be a Counselor in Training
  2. Babysit
  3. See if your local Community college has academic camps or camps that explore different careers (like medicine or whatever)
  4. Volunteer…your house of worship (if you have one) is a good idea
  5. Take a class in art/robotics/programming, etc.
