Professional Journalist Looking For Scholarships- Where Can I Begin Looking?

Hey Everyone,

I'm a first time poster to the financial aid forum, but figured it was a good time to stop by. As I begin to receive my college acceptances, I need to search for potential scholarships ( of any amount) that I could quality for.

About me: I am a high school senior that is, in retrospect, a professional journalist. I attend a competitive private school, where I have maintained a B+ average and a 1790 SAT/26 ACT.

I've taken multiple honors/AP courses, and have maintained a good balance with my school work and my activities.

Activities/Accomplishments: I have been writing about sports since my freshman year, and began writing at BleacherReport.com. Since then, my career has taken off as I now write for a site that's an affiliate of ESPN.

Here are some stats: Have 1 million+ total reads on all of my articles between both sites. Last year, I covered the Baltimore Ravens for a blog on NFL.com.

I've had articles published or linked to by ESPN, CBS Sports, and the Houston Chronicle.

This past summer, I attended a journalism seminar at Columbia University.

Other activities include: lector and volunteer at my church ( since freshman year), baseball coach in my community ( 3 years and counting), 60+ hours of community service with local charities, member of school newspaper, also a campus minister in my high school ( in charge of organizing retreats and school wide masses).

I am trying to search for some scholarships that involve both academic success and great community involvement. Also, if there are journalism scholarships out there, I'll certainly apply for those.

My family is new to this process and unsure of where to look, and to distinguish what sites are legit. Any help would be appreciated!

Scholarships for all 4 years of college are usually offered by the colleges themselves. Maybe someone can recommend some that will give good-sized scholarships for an ACT 26.

Private scholarships are often for small amounts and only for freshman year. So, they won’t help you pay for your 4 years of college.

You should ask your GC about any local scholarships…they are also often for freshman year only, but some are easier to win.

How much will your parents pay for college?

How much of your college costs do you need covered with scholarships?

What state are you in? Maryland?

Check with your state print association and your state broadcast association. Most give scholarships to those wanting to go into journalism. They also have contests - and many have prizes with them.

@mom2collegekids I am aware that most scholarships in college are earned while enrolled at the university. I’m just looking for any available scholarships in general so i can decrease the amount of potential debt I have in college.

@MaterMia I’ll look into that…

Thanks for both comments! Keep them coming!

Some of them are for students already enrolled in college, but others are available to hs students who plan to study journalism.

Two quick notes:

The scholarships offered by colleges are generally offered in the acceptance package–if it doesn’t show up in that first FA award, you missed out.

Second, any outside scholarships earned will usually reduce any merit/scholarship help from the college–so it can be a potential wash.

What kind of debt are you considering?

If your intention is to be a journalist when you graduate, you need to have the least debt that you can.

Well, I would say I’ll have a more clear idea come April when I receive all of my financial aid packages. I received a solid package from Syracuse, much better than what I expected, and doesn’t even include potential money from the FAFSA yet.

I didn’t get into Newhouse early ( plan is to transfer in/be English major and become journalist), and thus it is no longer binding and can compare offers.
