So pretty much, i woke up sick on the day of the final of my college algebra class. I wasn't dying or anything, but it was something that really kept me from going to class. i contacted the professor the day of the final explaining the situation. he contacted me and said that he will not give me the final because "you can only retake a final if you had a documented emergency." i really have no clue what to do. i was accepted into UCI, and this is my transferable math class. i know for a fact if i don't pass i will get recinded. do i contact someone higher up at my school, or what are my options?

Lol well… basically that sucks. You don’t know anyone that could verify that it was an emergency for you? Though I don’t believe in lying, perhaps you could ask a family doctor or someone for a note.

well i don’t have anyone in my family that is a doctor, so you mean like go to the doctors and ask them for a note?

i would get my butt out of bed and into school. If your well enough to be on here asking us, your well enough to at least take the test. Id rather be vomiting all over the class and get a 60% then a 0. Especially with my future college career on the line. Maybe he will see how sick you are and let you reschedule

@doomman, my final was last tuesday, not today.

I would of atleast gone to school to prove my sickness. If your whole life is riding on this final, you find anyway possible to do it. Your screwed man, plain and simple.

Look at the bright side, at least you’re not dead. Got that going for you.

it’s THE final. i don’t feel bad for you at all. Good luck applying for fall 2012

Yeah… at this point, it’s kind of like you should have known better. Plus, I’m sure your professor explains this on their syllabus (at least all of mine do).

sorry but if I was sick, I still would’ve gone to take the final…professors have always emphasized how important it is for you to be there and the fact that you cannot make it up unless it is really an emergency…sorry dude but all you can do now is either beg to your professor and tell him about your admission to UCI or just wait till Fall 2012…

OP you have got the be the smartest student on these forums. I mean, you really expect a professor to let some random student miss the final because he was inconveniently “sick”. And this wasn’t a deathly sick either…it was more of “oh look at me, I have a cough, I think I’ll skip the final and take it another day because I should get special treatment”

At first I thought your final was today, then it would have been manageable to take it today, just a little late or whatnot. But you said this was a week ago?

Sorry, but I don’t think you have any options. I wish you the best.

cry and beg to take the final?, but really, just tell the teacher about your circumstance, if he/she doesn’t accept it, then contact the math department. Also don’t forget to tell your case to uci, im pretty sure they would want to know, since math is a important transfer requirement.

If you were throwing up sick, I have to ask, did you take the final and barf on your professor?

Personally, I would’ve still gone to school but even as a kid, the only time I ever got a break from school from sickness was because of the Chicken Pox, otherwise my parents would’ve beat my ass all the way there. If it’s a final, you have to go, no excuses unless you are ER sick. The only option you have now is to get some doctor to forge a note for you otherwise you’re basically SoL. Maybe you can petition for an Incomplete and retake the course.

Yep, sounds like you might be screwed, OP. Talk to UCI and see if you can take the course over the summer or something.

Does your school let you petition for Incomplete?

Aside from that I would try to get a doctor to write a fake note. One might do it if you convince them that you were extremely ill the day of the test.

As an MD I can tell you that the vast majority of illnesses are self-limiting and require little or no treatment from a doctor. I generally do not publicize that since if everyone knew that it would be harder for physicians like me to make a living. Taking a test when you are not feeling well is certainly not conducive to a good score but you would probably have done better than a zero.

Under the circumstances, even though you knew your illness was probably self-limited and did not really require treatment from a doctor, it would have been a good idea if you had gone to your doctor anyway so that you would have some documentation of your illness on the day of your test. If it has been a week since you were sick and you were only symptomatic for a couple of days, there is no possibility now of any ethical physician confirming you were too ill to take your exam on the scheduled day.

qft…

Enroll in the class for summer .
Get a doctors note,
Call UCI and tell them what happened. At best you’ll be able to just retake it during summer and keep your admission( kudos on that sir, they rejected me) .
At worst you’ll have to apply for Winter Admission( a few UC’s do this, you have to literally call each one during summer and ask though . Like each one), which will hopefully still exist after the budget cuts .

I know for GEO a few nights I felt super sick, I literally sat in coffee bean drinking green tea for an hour, and even after that I was soo sick in class, like I couldn’t think straight.
