Does anybody know how Scerri compares to Y. Lin for chem20A? Lin got really good reviews on bruinwalk, but Scerri sounds like a good professor too. Anyone have any input on this?

bump any help here?

well, i think bruinwalk tells it all for you. maybe not many people on cc know about lin, since he seems pretty new (just look at the amount of people who rated him compared to the amount of people who rate scerri).

Well you definitely can't go wrong with Scerri. Excellent lecturer, minimal textbook reading, relatively easy to get good grades... what more can you ask for your first quarter! :)

Has anyone heard of Fernandez for math? I looked him up on Bruinwalk and he has no profile. Otherwise I am have to take Popa at 8 AM!

Scerri is great all-around for lecturing Chem 20A...
Just beware the curve!

beware the curve? what does that mean? worries

is his grading/curve system at least pretty fair? can you describe what the curve was like? thanks flopsy

Not flopsy, but...

It's basically like this:
median score separates B-/C+... which is usually ~60-70%
~one standard deviation above median score is A-, usually ~75-85%

Weighting:
Midterm (worse of your 2 scores): 20%
Midterm (better of 2): 25%
Quizes: 20% (almost easy 100% on quizzes)
Final: 35%

How about Lee for Math 32A? Or any recommendations of professors for that class?

i got a B+ in 20B wtih Scerri. i though he was a really good lecturer. some people don't like him bcause he makes his political stance very known. if he uses the Mastering Chem for quizzes, theyre online and you can re-take them as many times you want until you're satisfied with the grade. he didnt use Mastering Chem for 20B, but he somehow made it so that all my friends (probably most other people) all got 100% for the total quiz grade.

never heard of Lin before.

Nah, some people don't like him because they think that he's a bit too self-promoting / arrogant.

His side remarks regarding his political stance is amusing. It's not like he goes on and on about it. I prefer professors with personality... nothing worse than a robotic professor going on and on about the material.

oh yeah, the arrogance too. i find it amusing. :D
