I am very interested in the sciences and plan on going into medicine (be it practical or research) and am in a conundrum about how to best spend my summer.

One choice I have is to take courses at a nearby university just courses that interest me in general and get some credit hours for experience and to have some productivity in my summer.

My other choice is one that I've heard bad things about on this site (and other programs like it), NSLC. I have cousins who have gone to the medicine NSLC at UMD and loved it, but I have heard that these programs are largely non-selective and unimportant.

I feel that I would enjoy both of these, and don't assume that I am only trying to find the one that would "look best on my application to get me into X school". While I am considering the weight and benefit of my summer activities for the upcoming admissions process, I am simply trying to see which program would be the best and most productive way to spend my summer.

I encourage anyone with NSLC experience to drop some comments please!
