Progressive Rock

Off topic from prog and related genres, but have you guys ever listened to Medeski Martin & Wood? I find that people that like both prog and certain jazz forms like this as well.

@fallenchemist I’ve never actually heard of them before. I never really delved into jazz

Glam rock bloviated and took itself way too seriously by the mid-70s. Working class Brit teens could not feel any connection with the musicians or the music. They saw what the Ramones were doing in NYC and it took off from there.

Today is apparently the 43rd birthday of Close to the Edge :smiley:

Close to the Edge is one of the greatest prog albums ever released. The title track epitomizes prog.

@fallenchemist Never heard of them.

@Hermit9 I completely agree. And You and I and Siberian Khatru are absolutely amazing

I actually like SK more than AYAI, which isn’t a popular opinion. You?

Edit: Most people will read that second sentence and think that you are saying that the two of us are amazing, hahaha.

I prefer And You and I. I love both of the parts when it slows down and the orchestra comes in. Not that I have anything against Siberian Khatru

Wait, why do you hate Siberian Khatru?

:wink:

Lol I just have a soft spot for that part around 3.5 mins in, and then when Steve Howe brings in the lap steel guitar.
Speaking of And You And I, this is a stellar performance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fi-sUOM8io

Anybody heard of She the Killer?

@awesomepolyglot Never heard of them

@TheWaffleMan149 It’s a small local screamo band, and the guitarist is a Spanish teacher at my school.

@awesomepolyglot Interesting! I will have to check them out

Has anyone listened to the song Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree?

I need to.

@TheWaffleMan149 Listening now. Will update with my impressions.

Listen to Trilogy by Sonic Youth for something long and really nice instrumentally. It’s 3 movements of noise rock but I think you’ll really like it, especially Part II (Hyperstation).

This song is amazing dude, and I’m 5 minutes in. Guitars are very sludgy but menacing. Percussion is ace. Vocals are good, not great, but not a big deal.

If you like sludgy guitars, try listening to doom/sludge metal. I’d recommend the song Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard.

@Hermit9 What really makes the song for me is the entire atmosphere. Particularly the keyboards. And it just flows so well. As I said before, their drummer is actually in the current incarnation of King Crimson! He is an absolute BEAST.
I will definitely give those a listen tomorrow! I will let you know what I think!
