I'm a junior, and I got into both PROMYS 2014 (First-year) and Yale Young Global Scholars (Grand Strategy). I'm planning to major in mathematics/economics and my dream schools are MIT and UChicago. I know from a prestige standpoint, PROMYS is more impressive (I'm not sure about first-year though), but I already do a lot in terms of math and math competition, and I've been hearing advice about diversifying interests (I went to AwesomeMath last year as summer program).

In short, the prestige, price, and my interest in math are definitely pros for PROMYS, but I wonder if it is a good idea to show a diverse side of myself by going to YYGS. I'd love to hear opinion/advice from you guys!

From my experience, it really depends on what you want to do as you’re major. Are you interested in Mathematics? Then go to MIT. I personally attended PROMYS for two years, and I was accepted to MIT during the EA stage. Now, I’m not saying that going to PROMYS will automatically lead to an MIT acceptance, but it will definitely help. I’m sure that the YYGS will also help, but depending on your major, it would be wise to choose the program that better fits. If you have any questions about PROMYS you can pm me

I also got into YYGS Grand Strategy but I am attending, but my advice would be to go down the PROMYS route. If you really have a passion for STEM and MIT, then by all means go for it! After all, if your real goal is MIT or UChicago, go PROMYS. I would personally opt for YYGS because I love Yale and it has been my dream school for quite some time.

But I understand the allure of diversification since I got into the NJ Governor’s School of Engineering and Technology just today, also an intensive quasi-mathematical program. It’s probably more important to hone your fine points and pursue what you love.
