I had no idea there were so many genders…
That was my laugh of the day. I am not encouraging my kids to go into HR. Those poor people in a few years.
As far as gender, in the non-scientific sense there are probably infinite “genders” or as Urban Dictionary definition which is close to my definition of male/female/other and directly relates to the original post:
@momofthreeboys Who pray tell decided that “other” was the new pronoun/gender category?
Your statement-
“You can call yourself whatever you want that relates to whatever your emotional state happens to be or how you want to live but gender is just a simple sort…male/female/other…with a vast infinite spectrum of personality traits that have nothing to do with whether you identify as a male species or a female species or neither. If you don’t know if you are male or female or don’t want to be forced into male or female for political or personal reasons…I will give you a hint…choose other.”
DOESN’T correspond to many who were born intersex or transgender … for them (and others maybe?) gender isn’t an emotional state, personality trait or political statement at all, instead its a REAL biological and psychological experience .
The part of your brain that experiences gender identity is different from the part that controls sexual orientation and or your genitals. Your gender identity is a real
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/01/150107082133.htm
"While the biological gender is usually manifested in the physical appearance, the individual gender identity is not immediately discernible and primarily established in the psyche of a human being. As the brain is responsible for our thoughts, feelings and actions, several research institutions worldwide are searching for the neural representation of gender identity.
In a study under the guidance of Rupert Lanzenbergerof the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the MedUni Vienna published in the Journal of Neuroscience it was now possible to demonstrate neural correlates (analogies) of the identity perception in the network of the brain.
Trans-gender persons as well as female and male control subjects were examined by way of diffusion-based magnetic resonance tomography (MRT). The examination revealed significant differences in the microstructure of the brain connections between male and female control subjects. Transgender persons took up a middle position between both genders."
And even more biology-
"It was furthermore possible to detect a strong relationship between the microstructure connections among these networks and the testosterone level measured in the blood. Lanzenberger: “These results suggest that the gender identity is reflected in the structure of brain networks which form under the modulating influence of sex hormones in the course of the development of the nervous system.”
They are making fascinating inroads in neuroscience into understanding gender identity!
I expect that any research that claims that men and women have different brains would be offensive.
I gave up long time ago. My advice.
For adults: - “Doctor”. Regardless. Even when talking to a janitor. (janitor could have a doctor degree).
For young adults - “Student”.
If not sure - “Doctor”. Students will correct you, but they would be pleased to do so.
Furthermore checking “other” still doesn’t solve the “which pronoun to use” problem…
unless you are proposing that “other” be a new pronoun?
But then you run into grammar problems beyond singular or plural… ex “Bailey left other books”… did Bailey leave his/her/their books or different books? That opens a whole other connotation -no pun intended
<but then="" you="" run="" into="" grammar="" problems="" beyond="" singular="" or="" plural…="" ex="" “bailey=”" left="" other="" books"…="" did="" bailey="" leave="" his="" her="" their="" books="" different="" books?="" that="" opens="" a="" whole="" connotation="" -no="" pun="" intended="">
Bailey left PERSONAL books or different books. yes, I know, the grammar may suffer. But it is safer this way.
I am trying to avoid pronouns as much as possible.
Here an adjective mess:
Make sure to read the comments!
I wonder how many bulls are cows and how many cows are bulls?
Why can cats run free but dogs can’t?
If you can answer the above go for a trifecta. 4 cars pull up to a 4 way stop at the same exact time, who has the right-of-way? why?
Some of these genders on this list are …well…

Ahh…most of us call this a hotflash
I beginning to think sometimes instead of sensitivity training in colleges we need perhaps to have de-sensitivity training. I am suggesting that “other” is a very common and totally acceptable choice to give someone who identifies neither as a male nor as a female. Heck they can identify as a reincarnated cat and still check other. It’s not offensive. It’s not presumptuous. It can be anything anyone wants it to be - except male or female - and even then kids that are offended at having to chose male or female can chose “other.” It’s a free solution that would have saved UofM a ton of money and time I’m sure. The 11 professors could have ascribed any pronoun they wanted to “other” - ze or whatever tickles their fancy and have been done with it.
Zinhead you gave me a good chuckle with your link…that makes two days in a row I’ve had a good chuckle. The comments are priceless and apparently there are 14 individuals who staff the Columbia University Gender-based Misconduct Office.
Oh mom2collegekids…I just spit my afternoon water all over my keyboard.
The comments are fantastic. Here is one:
Yes I know this is a joke, but the fact that he was accused in the first place just shows just how dysfunctional some of these SJWs really are.
I am a bit of an anarchist at heart, and I was called to the Gender Misconduct office, I would file my own complaint and demand an apology from the accuser. If that wasn’t done, I would take it to the press.
The problem is that while SJWs have a lot of good points, being kids and attention seekers they also get needlessly macro angry from perceived micro aggression. This case of the Columbia kid is a case for the latter, and I am sure there are many like this, but it is not unreasonable to require that people with privilege treat others a bit kindly.
The problem is not with the students. The problem is with the Universities.I interact a lot with HS students. Great kids! No issues. However, these great kids go to colleges and the issues appear.
Interestingly, the pronoun problem came from UMich. Not from a no-name community college. No-name community college students don’t have issues with the proper pronouns, but apparently the super-duper fancy/expensive universities do.
Universities, especially the “top” ones, developed an industry of sensitivity-microagression-diversity-whatever else. Some faculty is using students as pawns to promote their own agenda (get additional funding, instruction hours, secure their careers). All crap is coming from adults, not from students.
Why is not it happening in community colleges? Not in HS? Why is it always happens in the most expensive, selective colleges?
Because it is driven by the college admins / faculty.
It’s definitely happening in liberal high schools like the one my son goes to. Perhaps the most expensive and selective colleges are also quite liberal in spirit, eh?
That’s a good thing IMO.

Unfortunately, a number of ADULTS rely on the sensitivity trainings for food and shelter. As long as (a minimum of) 11 people at UMich are paid to educate students on sensitivity and the correct pronouns …
Not sure I understand the Columbia Chinese class offense above, but Isn’t the point of taking a language class to also learn the culture/customs of countries in which it is spoken, so you can fit in and conduct business etc without offending others?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but with Chinese and many Asians countries and their languages, isn’t it very easy to offend someone say by using the wrong tone our inflection or not bowing or looking someone in the eye while greeting them (or something like that)…?
So why would you go into a foreign language class swaggering about how “I’m gonna be myself and never change a damn thing about my personality if it happens to offend you” (his words)???
The whole point of college is to become educated. Sure some things may seem over the top (and this case may have been) but if you expect to come out of college without becoming aware that there are more gender identities than male or female- strictly matching their genitals at birth, you will be doing yourself and your community a disservice and will be limited in your education.
Lots of people wanted/want to believe the Earth was/is flat too. But it isn’t. Educate yourself. That is the whole point of college.
