Proof of Citizenship

I found out yesterday that Columbia needed my proof of citizenship via email so I faxed it over today. Then I looked at the website of another college I'm applying too and they also said that they needed it. So then I decided to fax over my proof of citizenship to all my colleges in case they also needed them (because I can't check to see which documents they have received or have not received). I did not know that I needed to send a proof of citizenship before columbia sent me an email yesterday.
Now I'm really worried... since all the financial aid deadlines were March 1st and I sent all my colleges my proof of citizenship on March 3rd, would that make my whole financial aid application be considered late? I was really trying to make sure all my stuff was in before the deadline and I had sent everything else to the colleges over a month ago (in January!)

Is the proof of citizenship not as important as the FAFSA or Profile so the 2 day after deadline wouldn't matter?

Would I be considered “late” and not receive as much aid?

Don’t worry about it. Colleges are just sending you gentle reminders…

Honestly I haven’t even sent in mine, they don’t seem to care… well, who knows.

Minz, where did you apply? I know for my Barnard application… it certainly didn’t sound like a gentle reminder… it said that the later the financial aid application’s fully complete, the less aid i get! Is this really just a gentle reminder?

lovebrown

That sure doesn’t look like a “gentle reminder” to me. It looks like a warning. You did the right thing in faxing the paperwork as soon as you spotted that statement.

If you are concerned, pick up the phone and call the financial aid offices and ask if they’ve received everything that they need.

Good luck!

I have called the financial aid offices of various colleges, from Brown to Yale, and all have told me that I do not need to send them proof of citizenship until I decide to attend that college.
They all assure me that it will not delay my application for financial aid or my receipt of aid.

It appears to be a necessary document to file if you are attending the school and finally OBTAINING their financial aid, not when you are simply requesting it.

Thank you all so much for your replies. I will soon call all the financial offices… when I start getting home before 5 when all of them close >< I am very glad that it’s mainly needed after i’m accepted!

Frydafly, were you born in the US though? It might be different for you. For me, my parents became citizens 10 years ago and I was born in another country. So, I became a citizen only through my parents.
