Hi,

My son (rising HS senior) is interested in attending A&M and leaning towards Biomedical or Chemical Engineering. We'd like to go and take a campus tour this summer. I"m wondering if anyone has any good pointers about setting up a tour? Anything we should see/do while we're there?

His test scores are decent ACT/SAT 32/1980, but his rank is 15%. He attends an excellent HS and has done AP pretty much everything available except English. We tried to sign him up for the aggie summer institute, but he didn't get in.

I'd appreciate any tips on how to proceed! I know he qualifies for academic admit, but that doesn't guarantee that he can get a particular major, right?

Call the Visitors Center and set up a total tour - ask to visit the Biomedical and Chemical Engineering dept. Ask to speak to an admissions counselor. If you live near any of the regional prospective student centers, make an appointment and go visit them.

I would go to the Texas Common Application and look at the specific questions for TAMU. I would try to do whatever it takes to ‘check all the boxes’ you can.
There is no guarantee that the automatic academic admit will continue, probably will for your son - but no guarantee.
Also Community Service is a big deal. If your son does not have many CS hours, I would build some into his summer.

Oh, and apply early!

Thanks for the good advice. What would happen at “regional prospective student centers” visit?

If you are close to one of them, I would make an appointment and visit. It will give you a local contact person in the admissions office, and after acceptance, there is a scholarship person to help you too.
I’m just big on getting checks in the boxes on applications… These question are on the application… I would not want the only one that I checked to be NONE:
