Props to U of O

Gotta give this school thumbs up for the great communication through this process. D accepted way back in September and the messaging/marketing they have used throughout the process has been fabulous. Postcards and emails are consistent and tasteful, with enthusiasm. When you call with questions, nice people answer the phone and are super helpful. And the migration video sent out today was fantastic - D really enjoyed it, the whole family did. They are doing some good things up in Eugene! I am not new to this rodeo and am genuinely impressed with their efforts. Not sure if this thread is too active, but just wanted to share we are liking what we have seen so far. Been fun.

@CADREAMIN I was admitted in November and I completely agree with everything that you said! I called the housing department a couple of times with questions and the people who I talked to were very pleasant/helpful. I also find the frequency of UO’s mailings/emails to be just right. I receive postcards, letters, and emails from other schools that I was accepted to on an almost daily basis, and it honestly gets pretty annoying. And the migration video was absolutely fantastic!

My daughter was accepted to UO and I agree too - I loved the Migrate to UO postcard and personalized video they sent. They seem really supportive and welcoming to the kids. I also called the housing office a few times and everyone was very helpful.

Is it a contender for your D @CAtransplant?

@CADREAMIN at the moment it is, yes - how about for your D? We still have a number of schools to hear from in the next two weeks and then it’s time to make decisions!

Just curious if your kids chose UofO? If so, how do they like it so far?

Gonna pm you

Hi @Mimi2018 - my daughter did decide to go to U of O and she really likes it! I’d be happy to talk to you about it more if you like  I’m out of town tonight and back tomorrow afternoon.

Thank you both, CADreamin and LAtransplant for taking time to respond to my post!

We toured the campus yesterday and were very impressesed, especially with the honors college. Wow. It’s the first big school my D has looked at but the honors college really gives it a feel like a small school, so it seems to be the best of both worlds. The GLobal Scholars Hall (dorm) was incredible. I was blown away by how beautiful that building was. We’d have in-state tuition, too, which would be nice, not necessary but definitely helpful.

USC is one of D’s Top choices but she is in the lower percentile range so we are trying to keep her hopes in check.

Thank you both for your help. I really appreciate hearing from you.

@Mimi2018 Glad you enjoyed it! The students at UO were so incredibly nice and real people if that makes sense. GSH is something else and was a big draw for mine - not so much cause it was honors, but because it was so gorgeous. And being able to live on a language immersion floor was interesting for her. There are a lot of room configurations options there. We were OOS so she got that OOS scholarship which helped, but it was pretty much offset by the higher tuition for honors and choosing a “high end” room in GSH. Money wasn’t an influencing factor for us, but did want to point out that you can inch your costs up by making certain choices there. They have some really interesting summer study and credit opportunities - to some really interesting places and neat courses - you may want to look into those as well. Happy to help with anything USC over on that forum and @CAtransplant has you covered over here. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

@Mimi2018 my daughter is living in Global Scholars Hall! It’s beautiful. She didn’t apply to the Honors College, didn’t want to do it, but the HC do live in GSH. Then there are also the language halls as @CADREAMIN mentioned. And then there are some who are not affiliated with either like my daughter. We are also OOS but she got the scholarship which helps. This dorm IS expensive but it’s what they gave her when she asked for a single and it is nice so can’t complain.

Speaking of singles - my D has one at USC - omg she looooves it. Highly recommended if you can get one. Has met a lot of friends cause hers is the great room to hang out in. And no room mate stress or pineapples required.

CADreamin- thanks for the tip on the singles room! We are hoping to hear back from u of o soon. In the mean time, D is working away at her USC application.

CAtransplant, were there specific reasons she didn’t want to apply to the honors college? Also, I didn’t realize anyone could apply to live in GSH, so thanks for letting me know.
Edit: didn’t read back far enough to see all the info stated previously…sorry about that.

Hi @Mimi2018 - my daughter isn’t really an Honors College type. Take a look at this old thread - it starts really old like 2007 but towards last page there are comments from just about 2 years ago. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-oregon/397804-clark-honors-college-p1.html The reasons some people didn’t like CHC mentioned in there are some of the reasons she wasn’t interested in it. She wanted to study what she wanted and not have to take Gen Eds that CHC tells her she has to take. It seemed stuffy and pedantic to her also when we toured it. It’s just not her thing. I don’t know if it has changed. Re applying for a certain dorm: when you do the Housing Application, initially it said you could not list choice of dorm (Hall) only “type of room” of which there are many - single, large single, single with sink, double, large double, etc.! But there are certain dorms that were more desirable to her for various reasons. Towards the end of the Housing Application being open, they suddenly made a change so that you CAN request the halls you want. Don’t know if they will keep this. Also, they have things called ARCs - Academic Residential Communities - so if you say you want to live in a certain ARC (like Living the Language where you live with others who want to speak a foreign language) then you will be placed in a certain Hall due to that. Plus CHC all live in GSH. The other very nice hall is Living Learning Center and it’s a bit more centrally located than GSH.

@mimi2018 Although my D was admitted with honors and the scholarship thing…she too would have likely chosen to live in language immersion of the GSH building rather than the straight up honors floors to give her a little space rather than being with all honors kids all the time 24/7. Before she chose another school and we thought UO was it, she was struggling if honors was even worth it - it is more money and certain honors class requirements that eat into the classes you can take for your major, particularly if you want to double major which mine definitely did. Check out the honors requirements to see if how it fits with the major(s). Lastly, a lot of the honors classes are small and discussion based, which sounds great to parents - but the student has to think about how it fits them…15 people sitting around a table discussing subject matter at 8am appeals to some, while for others it is a total nightmare.
