Pros and Cons of the listed colleges

Hey guys, I am senior high school student, getting ready to audition and do a vocal performance major. I have decided that I don't want to go to a public school (I reside in CA) and will be going to a private school. So I am auditioning at University of Redlands, Chapman University, and CalState Fullerton. I am applying to CSUF because of their President's Scholar program, if I get accepted for it then it would certainly change things

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the faculty, facilites, reputation, financial aid, grants, or anything about the music department about the aforementioned schools.

If possible, could you list the colleges with the best being number 1 based solely on the music department there, with no regard to tuition or anything. Just the music department. Thank you very much.

Have you visited any of these schools? It would be good for you to see for yourself and take sample lessons from some of the faculty, observe classes, etc. Then you’ll know if you can find a fit. We looked in southern California with my D, visiting Long Beach State’s Bob Cole Conservatory, Chapman U and UCLA. I have heard good things about Redlands, but that is based on years ago, I don’t know what’s going on there now. Fullerton is more known for musical theater, and it has a great reputation for that. Chapman’s program is quite fine for vocal performance. They have good voice teachers, and the opera director is good also. You can get secondary music lessons, (piano or whatever) and that’s important to my D. The choir director is new this year, but Chapman has had a reputation for really good choirs. We liked it, but D was not wowed by it. Tuition is very high, though, so we’ll be waiting to see what happens with scholarships/financial aid. Sorry I can’t be of more help, but go and visit!

i have been to csuf but i didnt get the chance to go see the music department, my choir director told me its pretty good, she said its a solid program. About chapman u, my choir director’s husband went there and he said it was great, but they do have a new choir director. I have my audition with them this saturday. As for redlands, i didnt get to visit, but i talked to the choir director there at my summer program, and we were talking about the program and stuff.

I dont know if i can make it this saturday due to some family problems at home, gonna inquire to see if they can make an exception and let me send a cd/dvd, if not i guess ill take like fifty buses? haha we’ll see

thanks for the input

does anybody else know anything about these music programs? i would greatly appreciate your input.

There’s not a lot of specific info and most of the comments appear within these and the links within.

vvpstudent–Are you looking at programs that have particularly good choral programs as opposed to very strong VP programs? Or both for that matter? (Most of the direction that you are getting, seems to be from choir directors.)

thanks for the links viola dad

musicamusica, im looking for a program with a good VP program and choral program, but if i had to choose, id choose a better VP program

^ I know that Dr. Hall left, but I imagine that the choral program is still strong. Chapman has a history of being generous with the right students! Good luck, and tell us how your auditions go!

thanks musicamusica, i have just finished my auditions at redlands and chapman, i am deciding whether or not to pursue calstate fullerton because i really dont want to go to a public university.

I’m sorta waiting it out and seeing what U of R and Chapman tell me before i go audition at CSUF.

Do you know which university has a better Vocal Performance program between U of R and Chapman?

I will be visiting both in about a month or so, but I wanted to know the opinions of the some of the people here on CC

Sorry, I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about Redlands voice dept. I would not give up on Fullerton so fast…you never know where some great opportunities will be coming from!
