Recently, I have noticed that there are only four threads for Bates. Compared to Bowdoin and Colby, we are truly lacking questions and threads. The college process is difficult and as prospective students applying to Bates, you must have some questions that current students can answer. Use college confidential as a tool, it allows you to obtain perspectives that you cannot get from books. I am a freshman at Bates, and I plan to major in Chemistry and Mathematics. I look forward to hearing your questions!

First of all million thanks to Bates13 for being super kind to open this thread. It is also fitting that I want to major in chemistry.

How big are the intro and o-chem classes? Similar question to calculus classes?

What is the academic atmosphere among science majors? Is it more of graduate school’s learning for learning’s sake or the pre-med’s grade-grubbing?

How easy is it for freshmen to conduct research with professors, or just help out upperclassmen with their projects? Is there a big-brother, big-sister environment between class standings in the sciences?

How busy are you and friends from homework? Is it hard for a science-inclined person like me to excel in humanities classes?

What do you, and the science majors do in your spare time? Are the science majors well-integrated into the student body or stereotyped as the geeky ones?

Thanks a lot, Bates 13. Will definitely ask more question but those are the ones on top of my head right now.

when will the ED result come out?
i know it’s on 15Dec but don’t know exactly when. Also, I am an Asian student, so must wait until 16Dec instead (due to different time zones) Will they release like 1 2 days earlier or later?
will they send mail or email?

No problem at all! Last year, I used College Confidential all the time for all of my other prospective colleges but I found that Bates was lacking on threads. So, I hope that can change.
Class sizes are very reasonable. Intro classes in chemistry can be fairly large from a liberal arts standpoint and when I say large I mean around 50 kids or so. It is by no means a lecture class; you can still answer and ask questions. For organic, I am not sure yet because they suggested that I retake Intro to Chemistry. I had the credits to take Orgo this year, but it was a really smart choice not to. The chemistry department is very difficult at Bates. It is a great challenge and I love it. We go much more in-depth than any high school AP Course. The labs are also very challenging, but they are great. The professors are amazing and they are always willing to help. I love how personal the professors are here. For an example of the curriculum in Intro to Chemistry, we started with Spectroscopy and by passed all the boring grams to moles calculations. They expect that you learn those on your own. Believe me; it does not seem like an intro class at all. For research opportunities, Bates has a great deal of scholarships that you can apply for and half the time they go unused. Since Bates does not have an undergraduate program, the professors are dedicated to working with undergraduates and research.
This semester I am in Calc II and it is great. If you are good at math you shouldnt have much trouble. The professor I have now is challenging but is an amazing teacher. My Calc class is around 22 students I believe.
For Pre-Med Grade Grubbing, that seems like something you can never get away from. Haha But students at Bates are very down to earth. I find it a great learning experience here. Students arent point pickers and we work together well. You will never hear kids boasting about grades, usually all of that stuff students keep to themselves. And Yes I believe Bates prepares students tremendously for Grad-School.
For Homework, if you want to come to Bates expect a lot of work. Even though we only take four classes a semester, you will be working diligently throughout the week. Your friends will be doing tons of work as well so you will all be in the same boat. But believe me its a great academic experience and you will learn so much. Bates is also very fun on the weekends. They sponsor many dances and concerts. Also, there are many parties on the weekend, if you are into that scene. Bates is very liberal, so as long as you are safe there really isnt any drinking policy.
In order to excel in humanities at Bates you will have to work very hard. I have found that all students at Bates write really well. It is not impossible but you will see more Bs on papers that you ever did in high school. That is because an A at Bates translates to an exceptional paper, not just full effort.
And No, science majors arent categorized as the geeky students. Usually students that are majoring in humanities are good at science at well. Bates seems to take students that are strong in all academic disciplines. Those students just choose a different major path.
I hope this helped! I would highly recommend Bates. Its an amazing college. Dont get distracted by college rankings I have visited all of the NESCACs and each one has a completely different feel. You just need to find the one that finds you. Good Luck!

I believe Bates is still using snail mail. I know, it is very painful waiting. When you say you are an asian student do you mean that you live in Asia. If so, I believe they do sent decisions to International Students by email.

How preppy are Bates students? I would guess that the science majors are more of the t-shirt-and-jeans type but how about the rest of the student body.

Bates13,
I’ve heard that bates really need international students, eventhough they still have good diversification. Is this true?
I’m planning to make biochemistry or pre-med my major. For which field is the school well known?
I don’t know if you’ve seen unalove’s thread of uchicago, it’s very nice. It would help us a lot if you describe bates like her.
Are the student’s there very adventrous- or do you find them working day and night trying to cope up with their assignments?
Is the school very competitive?
Thank you bates13 for starting this thread- I really needed a person like you.

Hi guys! Just wanted to let you know that if you go to the bottom of the Bates (or any other forum) page, and click on the Display Options, you can get it to show you all the threads from the past year or more! Don’t worry, there’s more Bates action out there!

I am a prospective student from India. Is there a lot of racial segregation on campus (indians hang out with each other, chinese with each other. Do you get what I am saying)? I know that this happens at UPenn as well as Carnegie Mellon, so I am asking

Thanks a lot!!!

there seems to be very few people post in Bates’ threads…
everyday I check CC and all other schools have new posts except for Bates…

Hello all, I figured I’d join the Bates discussion. Go Bobcats! I am a recent Bates Alum ('07) who majored in biology. If you have questions about academics, athletics, social life, ask away.

There is some segregation on campus, but everyone is pretty inclusive. I knew a couple of students from India in my graduating class, and they were friends with everyone.

Bates has made efforts, especially in the past few years, to increase diversity on campus which includes international students. There is no “pre-med” designation for a major, but graduates have a high rate of success getting into medical school. The best person to ask about it is Lee Abrahamsen, chair of the medical studies committee. The biochem department is relatively small but the professors in it are great. I wasn’t a biochem major myself, but I took several courses that overlap with the department.

hello
i am international student applying to bates this year
and i wanted to know, what kind of equipment they have in chemistry/biochemistry labaratories, i mean NMR’s HPLC’s? are they modern or obsolete? and are there enough labarotories for all students taking chemistry class?
thanks in advance

has any ED applicant heard anything from Bates?
i’m very anxious… 5 more days to go…

Are accept/rejection letters only option at Bates…Any other option to obtain results
such as E MAIL

When did the ED letters go out last year?

I’m dying the get the ED results back. Do they send the letters out so that they will arrive on the 15th or do they send them on the 15th. I’ve heard both.

bates’ applicants are provided with accounts (garnet gateway or smt). Will the decisions be posted up there? Or will they send email? Or will they just send mail? what if the mail is lost?

Hey guys I’m a first-year at Bates right now. For US students, there are no e-mails. They ship the letter through priority mail, though. I received my ED letter on Dec 15. My letter came contained in a USPS bigger envelop so keep an eye out for that on Tuesday afternoon when you’re expecting your letter. Good luck to everybody!!!

hi do you have any idea about how international students will receive their letters?
also, what if one gets deferred? or even rejected? will they send any notification (mail/email) as well?

If you’re deferred or rejected, you will still receive a notification. I think International students received e-mails, but I’m not sure at all. Sorry! Just expect something on Dec. 15 most likely.

Hi! My question:

From what I’ve been reading Bates does not put a HUGE amount of weight on SAT scores, is this accurate? My SAT scores are decent, but very far from perfect. Just wondering if my chances are a lot lower because I did not receive a perfect 2400 on the SATs.
